It was built as an opera house in 1877–1878. With Its construction was commissioned by Walter Craigmiles, who grew up in the P.M. Craigmiles House. It remained in the Craigmiles family until 1896. In 1896, the building was purchased by J.E. Johnston and a group of investors that included J.T. Johnston, W.P. Lang, May Brown, J.A. Steed, and S.M. Johnston. The property was acquired in 1909 by John and Isa Steed, who added a drugstore to the first floor. A.B. Jones and Vastine Stickley bought Craigmiles Hall in 1948. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 2017. Description The area referred to as the "Cleveland Commercial Historic District" coexists with the area often referred to as "Downtown Cleveland," and was historically the primary social, commercial, and governmental area of Cleveland and Bradley County. William Allan Jones Jr. (born December 31, 1952) is an American businessman from Cleveland, Tennessee. He is the founder, chairman, and CEO of Check Into Cash, Creditcorp, Jones Management Services, and the Community Financial Services Association, as well as several other local lending agencies. He has been called the "father of the payday loan industry" for founding and building the first major payday loan chain.
