Crackdown (podcast)
''Crackdown'' is a Canadian monthly podcast first launched in 2019. The podcast was created and hosted by drug users and interrogates Canadian and global drug policy from the perspective of drug user activists who are the most impacted by these policies and fight to change them. The show is hosted by journalist Garth Mullins who talks about his own former drug use on the show. Critical reception The podcast won the Third Coast International Audio Festival's Impact award in 2019 and The Sidney Hillman Foundation's Canadian Hillman Prize in 2020. Garth Mullins
Garth Mullins is a Canadian radio producer, activist, methadone user, and musician. He is the host of the ''Crackdown'' podcast and a board member of Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users. His podcast won The Canadian Hillman Prize in 2020. Early life Mullins grew up in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories in the 1970s. He was bullied in school about his albinism. During high school he worked in banking and construction; after high school he worked in a mine in Northwest Territories. Being blind was a barrier to employment opportunities, prompting him to return to studies at the University of Victoria. Third Coast International Audio Festival
The Third Coast International Audio Festival (TCIAF or TCF), based in Chicago, curates audio stories from around the world and showcases them in various mediums. It is informally referred to as the "Sundance of Radio". The Sidney Hillman Foundation is an American charitable foundation that awards prizes to journalists who investigate issues related to social justice and progressive public policy. The foundation, founded in 1946, is named for Sidney Hillman, who was the founding president of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America. The foundation awards the annual Hillman Prize and the monthly Sidney Awards. The Foundation is headed by Bruce S. Raynor, former Executive Vice President of the SEIU.
