Coyote Ridge Open Space Preserve
Coyote Ridge Open Space Preserve" is an publicly owned park in southern Santa Clara County. It is currently undergoing restoration and infrastructure work and is scheduled to open to the public in 2018. Environment Because of its rare serpentine soil, this grassland area is a critical habitat for the Bay checkerspot butterfly, the California tiger salamander, and the California red-legged frog, all of which are endangered. It also supports a wide variety of California native and endemic plants. Acquisition Ins 2015 the Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority acquired 1,831 acres (7.41 km2) in the area previously referred to by various names, including Coyote Ridge. Coyote Ridge 3 (16750392230)
The coyote (''Canis latrans'') is a species of canine native to North America. It is smaller than its close relative, the wolf, and slightly smaller than the closely related eastern wolf and red wolf. It fills much of the same ecological niche as the golden jackal does in Eurasia. The coyote is larger and more predatory and was once referred to as the American jackal by a behavioral ecologist. Other historical names for the species include the prairie wolf and the brush wolf. The coyote is listed as least concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, due to its wide distribution and abundance throughout North America. Serpentine Soil
Serpentine soil is an uncommon soil type produced by weathered ultramafic rock such as peridotite and its metamorphic derivatives such as serpentinite. More precisely, serpentine soil contains minerals of the serpentine subgroup, especially antigorite, lizardite, and chrysotile or white asbestos, all of which are commonly found in ultramafic rocks. Bay Checkerspot Butterfly
The Bay checkerspot (''Euphydryas editha bayensis'') is a butterfly endemic to the San Francisco Bay region of the U.S. state of California. It is a federally threatened species, as a subspecies of ''Euphydryas editha''. Since the 1980s the population of checkerspots, the ''Euphydryas'' species and subspecies, has been in serious decline. This particular subspecies had been the subject of extensive study by researchers at Stanford University since the 1960s. Thus its vulnerability, particularly in light of rapid land development taking place in the San Francisco Bay Area, was recognized by this group of researchers. California Tiger Salamander
The California tiger salamander (''Ambystoma californiense'') is a vulnerable amphibian native to California. It is a mole salamander. Previously considered to be a subspecies of the tiger salamander (''A. tigrinum)'', the California tiger salamander was recently designated a separate species again. Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority
The Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority (OSA) is an independent special district in Santa Clara County, California, U.S. A bill signed by Governor Wilson in 1992, SB2027, created the district as the Santa Clara County Open Space Preserve as of February 1, 1993. In 2015, Governor Jerry Brown signed California Senate Bill SB422 to rename the authority with "Valley" instead of "County." The OSA serves areas of the county outside the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District with the exception of Gilroy.
