Cowglen
Cowglen is a district in the Scottish city of Glasgow, within the Newlands/Auldburn ward of the city but geographically closer to the large suburb of Pollok. It is situated south of the River Clyde. Much of its territory is open land occupied by a golf course, and it also adjoins Pollok Country Park. Cowglen was the site of a new military hospital during World War II, which continued to operate until 2000. Pollok Country Park
Pollok Country Park is a country park located between Shawlands, Crossmyloof, and Pollok in Glasgow, Scotland. In 2007, Pollok Country Park was named Britain's Best Park, and in 2008 it was named the Best Park in Europe, beating competition from parks in Italy, France, Germany, Poland and Sweden. Despite this, by 2019 it was considered that the park was 'underused' with plans drawn up to encourage more visitors. History and features The park, through which the White Cart Water flows towards Paisley, is the largest within the city of Glasgow. It was originally part of the Old Pollok Estate, which was home to the Maxwell family for over 700 years. In 1966 Mrs Anne Maxwell Macdonald gifted the estate, including Pollok House, to Glasgow Corporation with the condition that it remained a public park. In 1878 the Poloc Cricket Club was established. Newlands/Auldburn (ward)
Newlands/Auldburn (Ward 2) is one of the 23 wards of Glasgow City Council. Situated south of the city and the River Clyde, it is represented by 3 members as of 4 May 2017, one each from the Scottish National Party, Scottish Labour, and Scottish Conservatives. Boundaries and demographics The ward covers the areas of Pollokshaws, Newlands, Hillpark, Auldhouse, Merrylee, Cowglen, Kennishead, Eastwood, Mansewood, Carnwadric, Arden and the western part of Muirend, as well as Pollok Country Park. It is bordered to the east by , and railway stations, with and stations running through the centre. A 2017 boundary change resulted in the gain of Arden from the Greater Pollok ward, and a minor loss of a few streets in Cathcart to the Langside ward when the boundary was moved south from the White Cart Water to the Cathcart Circle Line railway. Glasgow City Council is the local government authority for the City of Glasgow, Scotland. It was created in 1996 under the Local Government etc. (Scotland) Act 1994, largely with the boundaries of the post-1975 City of Glasgow district of the Strathclyde region. Glasgow Pollok is a constituency of the Scottish Parliament ( Holyrood), being one of eight constituencies within the Glasgow City council area. It elects one Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) by the plurality (first past the post) method of election. Pollok
Pollok ( gd, Pollag, lit=a pool, sco, Powk) is a large housing estate on the south-western side of the city of Glasgow, Scotland. The estate was built either side of World War II to house families from the overcrowded inner city. Housing 30,000 at its peak, its population has since declined due to the replacement of substandard housing with lower-density accommodation.
