Cowcowing
Cowcowing is a small town located just off the Koorda– Wyalkatchem road from Perth, south of Koorda and north of Wyalkatchem in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia. The town originated as a railway siding on the Wyalkatchem to Southern Cross railway line and was later gazetted as a townsite in 1919. The name of the town is Aboriginal in origin and was first recorded by explorers in 1854. The name of the nearby lake recorded as "Gow gow eeh lake" has now been changed to Cowcowing Lake; the meaning of the name remains unknown. The town is a Cooperative Bulk Handling receival site. On 2 October 2022, a helicopter accident occurred near Cowcowing Lake, killing two people. Koorda, Western Australia
Koorda is a town in the north eastern Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, approximately east of Perth and north of Wyalkatchem at the northeastern end of the Cowcowing Lakes. It is the main town in the Shire of Koorda. At the 2016 census Koorda had a population of 414. The surrounding areas produce wheat and other cereal crops. The town is a receival site for Cooperative Bulk Handling. History In 1913 the government decided to construct a railway line from Wyalkatchem to Mount Marshall (southeast of Bencubbin), and the Central Cowcowing Progress Association requested that land be set aside for a townsite at the proposed siding in this area. In 1914 the Jirimbi and Mulji Progress Association again requested a townsite here, and also in 1914 the proposed siding here was named Koorda at the suggestion of J Hope, the Chief Draftsman in the Lands Department. The Shire of Wyalkatchem is a local government area located in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia. Its seat of government is the town of Wyalkatchem, about northeast of Perth, the state capital. History On 18 June 1920, the Wyalkatchem Road District was created out of land previously administered by the Ninghan and Dowerin Road Boards. On 1 July 1961, it became the Shire of Wyalkatchem under the ''Local Government Act 1960'', which reformed all remaining road districts into shires. Wyalkatchem To Southern Cross Railway Line
The Wyalkatchem to Southern Cross railway line is a partially operational railway line, operated by Arc Infrastructure, in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, once connecting Wyalkatchem with Southern Cross. Of the former long railway, only the western part, the long section from Wyalkatchem to Mukinbudin is still operational as the Wyalkatchem to Mukinbudin railway line. At Wyalkatchem, the railway line connects to the Goomalling to West Merredin railway line, with only the Goomalling to Wyalkatchem section of this line still being operational. At Mukinbudin, the line now terminates while, in the past, it extended all the way to Southern Cross, where it connected to the Eastern Goldfields Railway. Wyalkatchem is a town in the central Wheatbelt region, east-north-east of Perth, east of Dowerin and south of Koorda. At the , Wyalkatchem had a population of 358. The town won the state tidy town award in 2000 and 2002, and then won the national award in 2003. History Wyalkatchem is an Aboriginal name first recorded for a waterhole, spelt Walkatching in the 1870s. The spelling Walcatching was used in 1881 when the Toodyay Road Board referred to a tank to be built there, and when the road from Northam to the Yilgarn Goldfield was surveyed in 1892 the spelling Wyalcatchem was used for the tank. The Walkatching spelling is probably the most accurate, as Aboriginal names in this region rarely end in ''em''. Central Wheatbelt is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. The district is centrally located in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia. Politically, Central Wheatbelt is a safe National Party seat. History Central Wheatbelt was first created for the 2008 state election. It was essentially an amalgamation of the abolished National-held districts of Avon and Merredin, although parts of each ended up in neighbouring districts. The Wheatbelt is one of nine regions of Western Australia defined as administrative areas for the state's regional development, and a vernacular term for the area converted to agriculture during colonisation. It partially surrounds the Perth metropolitan area, extending north from Perth to the Mid West region, and east to the Goldfields–Esperance region.
