Cow Flat
Cow Flat is a suburb near the Australian town of Bathurst. It was the birthplace of author Arthur Wright. Cow Flat was the site of copper mining from 1871 to around 1910. There are some remnants of the copper mine, the most notable of which is the former manager's cottage constructed of basalt blocks. Below the house are slag heaps from copper smelting. The Cow Flat copper mine and smelters were for a time owned by Lewis Lloyd Lewis Kevin Lloyd (February 22, 1959 – July 5, 2019) was an American basketball player. Bathurst () is a city in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales, Australia. Bathurst is about 200 kilometres (120 mi) west-northwest of Sydney and is the seat of the Bathurst Regional Council. Arthur Wright (writer)
Arthur Wright (1870 – 19 December 1932) was an Australian writer best known for his novels set against a background of the sporting world, particularly horseracing, which meant he was often compared during his lifetime to Nat Gould. In his lifetime he was called "Australia's most prolific novelist". Biography Wright was born in the small town of Green Swamp near Bathurst. His family lived in Bathurst, then Cow Flat before moving to Sydney. Wright was educated at Paddington Public School, worked for a sewing machine firm, then went bush for a few years, doing various odd jobs in places like the mines, shearing sheds and railways. He returned to Sydney and worked for the Water and Sewerage Board for eight years. While at the Water Board, Wright began to write in his spare time, and his short stories started appearing in magazines such as ''The Bulletin''. Lewis Lloyd (politician)
Lewis Lloyd (27 September 1842 – 12 February 1902) was a Welsh-born Australian mining entrepreneur and politician. Business career Lloyd was trained at a smelter at Caermarthen, Wales. Lloyd migrated to New South Wales in 1863 to work at the copper smelter at Cadia. According to his obituary, he was a Welsh language speaker and could not speak English at the time of his emigration. Lloyd was able to use his expertise in copper smelting to obtain an interest in copper mining ventures. In at least one of his earlier ventures, he was in partnership with Saul Samuel. He went on to become a well-known mining entrepreneur and was known as the "Copper King".In 1874, he built a copper smelter at Lithgow, which he located near the Eskbank Colliery so that he could use otherwise unsaleable fine coal (then known as 'slack' coal) to fire his furnaces. His was the first of three copper smelters established in Lithgow, during the 19th century, to make use of 'slack' coal as a fuel. ...
