Coventry Society
The Coventry Society is a voluntary body and is the civic society for the city of Coventry, England. It was founded in 1970, as the Coventry Civic Amenities Society, in opposition to the proposed demolition of Kirby House. The society is registered as a charity in England, number 500229, and is affiliated to Civic Voice Civic Voice is the national charity for the civic movement in England. It was set up in 2010 following the demise of the Civic Trust. Kirby House, Coventry
16 Little Park Street (also known as Kirby House) is a Georgian architecture, Georgian townhouse (Grade II* listed buildings in Coventry, Grade II* listed) in central Coventry, West Midlands (county), West Midlands, England. It is one of two remaining Georgian buildings on the street and three in the city centre (the other two being 7 Little Park Street and 11 Priory Row). The name Kirby House comes from Thomas Hulston Kirby, a solicitor and clerk to the county's magistrates, who bought it in 1874. Civic Voice is the national charity for the civic movement in England. It was set up in 2010 following the demise of the Civic Trust. It is now a fully remote organisation but with office space and registered address in Poundbury, Dorchester in Dorset. Its Chief Executive Officer from February 2025 has been Rob Hattersley. The president of Civic Voice is Griff Rhys Jones. Civic Voice's vice presidents are Laura Sandys, Baroness Andrews, Sir Terry Farrell and Freddie Gick. Civic Voice has had two co chairs since November 2024: Robert Osborne and Andrew Jackson, supported by a further 5 trustees. Coventry, a city in the West Midlands (region), West Midlands, England, grew to become one of the most important cities in England during the Middle Ages due to its booming cloth and textiles trade. The city was noted for its part in the English Civil War, and later became an important industrial city during the 19th and 20th centuries, becoming the centre of the British bicycle and later motor industry. The devastating Coventry Blitz, Blitz in 1940 destroyed much of the city centre, and saw its rebuilding during the 1950s and 60s. The motor industry slumped during the 1970s and 80s, and Coventry saw high unemployment.
