Coventry City Council Elections
Coventry City Council elections are generally held three years out of every four, with a third of the council being elected each time. Coventry City Council is the local authority for the metropolitan borough of Coventry in the West Midlands, England. Since the last boundary changes in 2004, 54 councillors have been elected from 18 wards. Political control From 1889 to 1974 Coventry was a county borough, independent of any county council. Under the Local Government Act 1972 it had its territory enlarged and became a metropolitan borough, with West Midlands County Council providing county-level services. The first election to the reconstituted city council was held in 1973, initially operating as a shadow authority before coming into its revised powers on 1 April 1974. West Midlands County Council was abolished in 1986 and Coventry became a unitary authority. Coventry City Council
Coventry City Council is the local government body responsible for the governance of the City of Coventry in England, which has been a metropolitan district since 1974. The city is divided up into 18 Wards each with three councillors. Coventry has usually been controlled by the Labour Party over the past few decades, and at times they appeared to be in safe control. However, the Conservatives held control for a short time in the 1970s, and they also held control from July 2004 until 2010. For a time they held control on the casting vote of the Lord Mayor, but they won clear control at the local elections of 4 May 2006. However, in 2010 the Conservatives lost control of Coventry City Council when Labour gained enough seats to have overall control. The leader of the controlling Labour group is George Duggins. 2012 Coventry City Council Election
Elections for Coventry City Council were held on Thursday, 3 May 2012, the same day as other 2012 local elections in the United Kingdom. As the council is elected by thirds, one seat in each of the city's 18 wards was up for election. The Labour Party won the seat in 15 of the wards, gaining a total of 8 and increasing their majority to 32 seats. The Conservative Party won the remaining three seats, losing six, with the Liberal Democrats and the Socialist Party both losing their only seat on the council. The election coincided with a local referendum on whether to have an elected mayor. Campaign The Conservative party focused their efforts on retaining their existing seats, campaigning on issues like the closure of Sure Start centres, disruption caused by rebuilding the city centre, and an alternative budget proposal. 2011 Coventry City Council Election
Elections for Coventry City Council were held on Thursday 5 May 2011. As the council is elected by thirds, one seat in each of the wards was up for election. The vote took place alongside the 2011 United Kingdom Alternative Vote referendum. Labour took five seats (Bablake, Sherbourne, Westwood, Whoberley, and Woodlands) from the Conservatives, and retained control of the council with an increased majority, holding 35 out of 54 seats. During the election count, a box of ballot papers for Cheylesmore ward was misplaced. Before they were discovered, Councillor Kevin Foster was about to concede that he had lost his seat, although after the additional votes were counted he had retained it. Elections for Coventry City Council were held on Thursday 6 May 2010. As the council is elected by thirds, one seat in each of the wards was up for election. Labour gained five seats (Cheylesmore, Foleshill, Sherbourne, Whoberley, Wyken) from the Conservatives and one seat (St Michael's) from the Socialist Party. As a result, Labour gained control of the council, with 30 out of 54 seats. A general election was held on the same day, which accounts for the higher turnout. Elections for Coventry City Council were held on Thursday 1 May 2008. As the council is elected by thirds, one seat in each of the wards was up for election. The Labour Party gained two seats (Radford, whose sitting councillor had been elected for Labour but later switched parties, and Foleshill) from the Conservative Party and the Conservatives gained one seat (Westwood) from Labour.
