Covenant College is a private, liberal arts, Christian college in Lookout Mountain, Georgia, United States, located near Chattanooga, Tennessee. As the college of the Presbyterian Church in America, Covenant teaches subjects from a Reformed theological worldview. Approximately 1,000 students attend Covenant each year. History Founded in 1955 in Pasadena, California, as an agency of the Bible Presbyterian Church, Covenant College and Covenant Theological Seminary moved its campus to St. Louis, Missouri, the following year. Following a split among the Bible Presbyterians, it became affiliated with the Bible Presbyterian Church-Columbus Synod (renamed the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in 1961). A lookout or look-out is a person in charge of the observation of hazards. The term originally comes from a naval background, where lookouts would watch for other ships, land, and various dangers. Marion David Barnes (1913–2004) was President of Covenant College from 1965 to 1978. According to Rudy Schmidt, Barnes "paved the way for the college to move from its Midwestern roots to be a welcomed institution in the Southeast." Barnes grew up in Union County, Arkansas, and studied at the University of Arkansas before teaching chemistry at City College of New York, Columbia University and Wheaton College.
