He began his career as an assistant professor of philosophy at Bethel College in Arden Hills, Minnesota, but soon departed for the world of business. Between 1984 and 1997, he served as an executive officer in various Chicago based companies, including for two years as Senior Vice President of Chicago Research and Trading Group, Ltd. From 1996 to 1997, he worked as partner and trader for Ritchie Capital Markets Group, LLC.
