Covarrubias Adobe
The Covarrubias adobe is a California Historical Landmark in Santa Barbara, California. The house is one of the oldest in Santa Barbara, built in 1817. The adobe became a California State Historical Landmark No. 308 on September 12, 1939. The house is also on the Santa Barbara City Landmark. The house is located at 715 Santa Barbara Street. The house is a L-shaped with four rooms, the original Spanish tile roof was later replaced. History Don Domingo Carrillo used local Chumash Indians labor to build the house. He built the house for his wife Concepción Pico Carrillo (Jan. 09, 1797 -?). Concepción and Domingo married on October 14, 1810, Concepción is the sister of Pío Pico, the last governor of Alta California. California Constitutional Conventions
The California Constitutional Conventions were two separate constitutional conventions that took place in California during the nineteenth century which led to the creation of the modern Constitution of California. The first, known as the 1849 Constitutional Convention of Monterey, held in September and October 1849 in advance of California attaining U.S. statehood the following year, adopted the state's original constitution. This document maintains jurisdiction along with the current constitution which was ratified on May 7, 1879, following the 1879 Constitutional Convention of Sacramento. The history of Santa Barbara, California, begins approximately 13,000 years ago with the arrival of the first Native Americans. The Spanish came in the 18th century to occupy and Christianize the area, which became part of Mexico following the Mexican War of Independence. In 1848, the expanding United States acquired the town along with the rest of California as a result of defeating Mexico in the Mexican–American War. Santa Barbara transformed then from a small cluster of adobes into successively a rowdy, lawless Gold Rush era town; a Victorian-era health resort; a center of silent film production; an oil boom town; a town supporting a military base and hospital during World War II; and finally it became the economically diverse resort destination it remains in the present day. The British War Relief Society (BWRS) was a US-based humanitarian umbrella organisation dealing with the supply of non-military aid such as food, clothes, medical supplies and financial aid to people in Great Britain during the early years of the Second World War. The organisation acted as the administrative hub and central receiving depot for items donated from other charities which were then parceled out to its affiliate organizations in the US and to Britain. These donations were raised in the name of the BWRS, rather than in the name of the smaller groups. Los Rancheros Visitadores
''Los Rancheros Visitadores'' or the "Visiting Ranchers" is a social club in the United States. The group meets on ranch land in Santa Barbara County, California, Santa Barbara and embarks northward on a journey across the countryside after receiving a blessing at the Santa Ynez, California, Santa Ynez Spanish missions in California, Mission. It attracts over 700 riders on its annual trek. It was founded by the banker and United Airlines co-founder Jack Mitchell (banker), Jack Mitchell and friends, and Mitchell was the first president and led the group for 25 years. Members and guests have included Edward Borein, Thomas M. Storke, Clark Gable, Ronald Reagan, and Walt Disney. In 1938, Los Rancheros acquired the Covarrubias Adobe from historian and author John Southworth for $15,000, and they undertook reconstruction and strengthening of the house in 1940.
