County Of Gladstone (Northern Territory)
County of Gladstone was one of the five counties in the Northern Territory which are part of the Lands administrative divisions of Australia#Northern Territory, cadastral divisions of Australia. Gladstone County was one of the original three counties in the top end, and the only County not in the Darwin, Northern Territory, Darwin hinterland. The county was partly subdivided into Hundred (county division), Hundreds. The county was centred on the Roper River at a time when the Roper River seemed to offer a great economic possibility. The county covers the traditional lands of the Ngalakgan, Ngalakan, Marra language, Marra, and Mangarayi peoples. Main settlements in the County included Urapunga, Mataranka, Northern Territory, Mataranka and Jilkminggan, Northern Territory, Jilkminggan and Ngukurr. Ngukurr ( , ), formerly Roper River Mission (1908−1968), is a remote Aboriginal community on the banks of the Roper River in southern Arnhem Land, Northern Territory. A number of different clans and language groups are represented in the town, with Kriol being the main language spoken. Collectively, the Aboriginal people in the Roper River area refer to themselves as Yugul Mangi, and the township is run by the Yugul Mangi Development Aboriginal Corporation (YMD), which represents about 200 people in seven clans. William Ewart Gladstone ( ; 29 December 1809 – 19 May 1898) was a British statesman and Liberal politician. In a career lasting over 60 years, he served for 12 years as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, spread over four non-consecutive terms (the most of any British prime minister) beginning in 1868 and ending in 1894. Lands administrative divisions of Australia are the cadastral divisions of Australia for the purposes of identification of land to ensure security of land ownership. Most states term these divisions as counties, parishes, hundreds, and other terms. The eastern states of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and Tasmania were divided into counties and parishes in the 19th century, although the Tasmanian counties were renamed land districts in the 20th century. Parts of South Australia (south-east) and Western Australia (south-west) were similarly divided into counties, and there were also five counties in a small part of the Northern Territory.
