Bill Fay (born William Fay; 1943) is an English singer-songwriter. His early recordings were released by Deram, but following the release of his second album in 1971, Fay was dropped by the label. His work enjoyed a growing cult status in the 1990s, and his older works were re-issued in 1998 and 2004/2005. Fay's 2012 album '' Life Is People'' was his first album of all-new material since 1971. His most recent album, '' Countless Branches'', was released on 17 January 2020. Biography Early career Fay was born in north London, where he still lives. His first single, "Some Good Advice" / "Screams in the Ears", was issued on the Deram label in 1967, and was followed by two albums, ''Bill Fay'' in 1970 and ''Time of the Last Persecution'' in 1971. The recordings did not sell well, and Fay was dropped from Deram soon after the release of his second album. They were re-issued in 1998, and then again in 2005. Dead Oceans is part of Secretly Group, which also includes labels Secretly Canadian and Jagjaguwar and a music publisher, Secretly Publishing, that publishes artists, writers, filmmakers, producers, and comedians. History Phil Waldorf, a Virginia native with a teenage love of skateboarding and punk rock seven-inch records, attended college in Athens, Georgia, where he was music director for the college radio station, WUOG. In Athens, Waldorf came to know future indie bands Neutral Milk Hotel and Olivia Tremor Control in their formative years, going to early house shows before both bands rose to underground fame. ''Who Is the Sender?'' is the fifth studio album by English singer, pianist and songwriter Bill Fay, released by Dead Oceans in April 2015 by Dead Oceans. The second album track, "War Machine", was released in February 2015. The closing track, "I Hear You Calling (Studio Reunion)", was originally recorded for Fay's 1971 album ''Time of the Last Persecution''. Reception At Metacritic, which assigns a normalised rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, ''Who Is the Sender?'' received an average score of 76, based on 13 reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews". AllMusic reviewer Thom Jurek said that the album contains "simple, profound songs" that "embrace the totality of earthly experience in the presence of the Divine".
