The Council for the Defence of British Universities (CDBU) is a group of individuals who express worries about the long-term direction of higher education policy in the United Kingdom and lobby for fundamental changes. They particularly oppose the marketisation of Higher Education in the country. The CDBU was founded in November 2012 by 66 founding members, including Sir Michael Atiyah, Sir David Attenborough, Alan Bennett, Sir Colin Blakemore, Dame Baroness Deech, Ruth Deech, Baroness Deech, Marcus du Sautoy, Sir Deian Hopkin, Sir Tim Hunt, Sir Paul Nurse, Dame Bridget Ogilvie, Lord Pannick, David Pannick, Baron Pannick, Sir Roger Penrose, Martin Rees, Martin Rees, Baron Rees of Ludlow, Quentin Skinner, and Sir Peter Swinnerton-Dyer. It is incorporated in England as a private company limited by guarantee, not for profit company limited by guarantee. A company limited by guarantee (CLG) is a type of company where the liability of members in the event the company is wound up is limited to a (typically very small) amount listed in the company's articles or constitution. Most have no share capital, although rare exceptions exist. The form originated in the United Kingdom, and now exists under the company law of the Australia, Bermuda, Gibraltar, Hong Kong, Gambia, and Ireland, and in the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Nova Scotia. It previously existed in New Zealand. It is used primarily but not exclusively by non-profit organisations (including charities) that require legal personality.
