Corrado De Vita
Corrado De Vita (Noto, 1905 - Rome, 21 September 1987), was an Italian journalist and writer. Early life He was born in Noto but completed his studies in Naples, graduating in Literature, a pupil of the Dante scholar :it:Francesco Torraca. His thesis was on Ariosto. He then moved to Milan and collaborated with ''La Fiera Letteraria'', a cultural weekly founded and directed by Umberto Fracchia. Later he was editor of the cultural page of the newspaper '' :it:La Tribuna''. At the end of the 30s he moved to ''Il Giornale d'Italia'' for which he became a war correspondent and made a number of voyages with the Regia Marina. During World War Two As a war correspondent De Vita witnessed first hand a number of clashes with the British fleet in which the Regia Marina suffered disastrous defeats: the Battle of Calabria (July 9, 1940), the Battle of Taranto (November 12, 1940) and the Battle of Cape Matapan (March 23 - 29, 1941). Noto
Noto ( scn, Notu; la, Netum) is a city and in the Province of Syracuse, Sicily, Italy. It is southwest of the city of Syracuse at the foot of the Iblean Mountains. It lends its name to the surrounding area Val di Noto. In 2002 Noto and its church were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Etymology Noto is regarded as having a possible Ancient Greek etymology. Likely, the name is derived from "south" (Greek: Νότιο Πήλιο), as in Notion and Notio Aigaio. History The old town, Noto Antica, lies directly north on Mount Alveria. A city of Sicel origin, it was known as Netum in ancient times. In 263 BCE the city was granted to Hiero II by the Romans. According to legend, Daedalus stayed in the city after his flight over the Ionian Sea, as did Hercules after his seventh task. During the Roman era, it opposed the magistrate Verres. Elio Vittorini
Elio Vittorini (; 23 July 1908 – 12 February 1966) was an Italian writer and novelist. He was a contemporary of Cesare Pavese and an influential voice in the modernist school of novel writing. His best-known work is the anti-fascist novel ''Conversations in Sicily'', for which he was jailed when it was published in 1941. The first U.S. edition of the novel, published in 1949, included an introduction from Ernest Hemingway, whose style influenced Vittorini and that novel in particular. Life Vittorini was born in Syracuse, Sicily, and throughout his childhood moved around Sicily with his father, a railroad worker. Several times he ran away from home, culminating in his leaving Sicily for good in 1924. For a brief period, he found employment as a construction worker in the Julian March, after which he moved to Florence to work as a type corrector (a line of work he abandoned in 1934 due to lead poisoning). Carlo Bo
Carlo Bo (25 January 1911 – 21 July 2001) was an Italian poet, literary critic, distinghuished humanist, a professor and Life senator of Italy (from 1984). Biography Bo was born on January 25, 1911, in Sestri Levante, Italy. From 1929 to 1934 he attended the humanities school at the University of Florence, moving from the study of classical literature to modern literature, discipline in which het took his Laurea in 1934. Bo wrote his first book in 1935, a monograph on Jacques Riviere. Before the Second World War, in the year 1936, he published an essay on the literary magazine '' Il Frontespizio'' which gathered together the most relevant poets like Mario Luzi, and contemporary artists from Ottone Rosai to Giorgio Morandi and Quinto Martini. His essay was titled "Letteratura come vita (Literature as a way of life)", containing the theoretical-methodological fundamentals of hermetic poetry. Editori Riuniti is an Italian publishing house based in Rome that publishes books and magazines on the history of socialism, socialist thought, physics and mathematics theory, and the history of Central and Eastern Europe and the Balkans. History Editori Riuniti was founded in 1953 by the merger of the Italian Communist Party's two existing publishing houses, 's Edizioni Rinascita and 's Edizioni di Cultura Sociale. Bonchio became head of the new publishing house and initiated, in its first decade, a period of expansion. Editori Riuniti began publishing its flagship magazines, which were initially edited by Bonchio and Gerratana until Bruno Munari contributed to their graphic design.
