Cornerswell is an electoral ward in Penarth, Vale of Glamorgan, Wales. It elects two county councillors to the Vale of Glamorgan Council and four town councillors to Penarth Town Council. Description The Cornerswell ward covers the residential area west of Penarth town centre including Cogan and the area of Penarth north of Cornerswell Road. The St Augustine's ward lies to the east, Stanwell to the south and Llandough to the north. Penarth ( , ) is a town and Community (Wales), community in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, approximately south of Cardiff city centre on the west shore of the Severn Estuary at the southern end of Cardiff Bay. Penarth is a Seaside resort#British seaside resorts, seaside resort in the Cardiff Urban Area, and the second largest town in the Vale of Glamorgan, next only to the administrative centre of Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, Barry. The Vale of Glamorgan Council is the governing body for the Vale of Glamorgan, one of the Subdivisions of Wales, Principal Areas of Wales. History The new Vale of Glamorgan Council unitary authority came into effect on 1 April 1996, following the dissolution of South Glamorgan. It replaced the Vale of Glamorgan Borough Council, which had been created in 1974 as a second-tier authority to South Glamorgan County Council. Penarth Town Council is an elected community council serving the town of Penarth in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales. Background Penarth has had a council of one form or another since the 1890s. Penarth Town Council came into existence in 1974 at the same time as local government reorganisation. Town councillors represent Penarth's views on various committees and to wider public bodies. The 2012 Vale of Glamorgan Council election took place on Thursday 3 May 2012 to elect members of Vale of Glamorgan Council in Wales. This was the same day as other United Kingdom local elections. The previous full council election took place on 1 May 2008 and the next one took place on 4 May 2017. Election result The Conservatives lost control of the council after losing 14 seats. The Labour Party became the largest grouping, but failed to win enough seats for an overall majority.
