Cornelius McCurtain
Cornelius McCurtain (1803-1871) was a Choctaw politician who served as the district chief of the Moshulatubbee District from 1850 to 1854. Biography Cornelius McCurtain was born in the Choctaw Nation within Mississippi Territory on March 5, 1803, to Daniel McCurtain and Hannah Cole. Daniel McCurtain was the son of an Irish immigrant of the same name who had fought in the American Revolution and Celia Jane, a member of the Choctaw tribe. Hannah Cole's mother, Shamoka, was Chakchiuma. He married Mahayia Bevlin in 1826. The couple had seven children: Jackson, Sina, Isabelle, Edmund, David, Greenwood, and Elsie. He moved to Indian Territory in 1822 and settled near Fort Coffee. In 1849 he was elected district chief of the Moshulatubbee District and he served from 1850 to 1854. Moshulatubbee District
Moshulatubbee District was one of three provinces, or districts, comprising the former Choctaw Nation in the Indian Territory. Also called the First District, it encompassed the northern one-third of the nation. In some historic records it is spelled Mushulatubbe. The Moshulatubbee District was named in honor of Chief Moshulatubbee, a Choctaw Indian warrior and statesman. Moshulatubbee was chief of the ''Okla Tannap'' ("Lower Towns") District in the original Choctaw Nation of the Southeast. Many Choctaw from that period referred to the Moshulatubbee District as the Okla Tannap District. The other two districts were known as Apukshunnubbee and Pushmataha, also named after important leaders. Greenwood McCurtain
Greenwood "Green" McCurtain (November 28, 1848 – December 27, 1910) was a Choctaw statesman and law enforcement officer, and the last elected Principal Chief of the Choctaw Nation (1896–1900 and 1902–1906), serving a total of four elected two-year terms. After 1906 and dissolution of tribal governments under the Dawes Act prior to Oklahoma's annexation and achieving statehood, McCurtain was appointed as chief by Theodore Roosevelt. He served in that capacity until his death in 1910, and was the last freely-elected Chief of the Choctaws until 1971. Green McCurtain also achieved notice for represented his tribe as a delegate at the Sequoyah Constitutional Convention. The Chakchiuma were a Native Americans in the United States, Native American tribe of the upper Yazoo River region of what is today the state of Mississippi. In the late 17th century, French explorers identified the Chakchiuma as "a Chickasaw, Chicacha nation," indicating that they were related to the Chickasaw and similar Muskogean languages, Western Muskogean speaking–tribes.
