Cornelis Vels
Cornelis Johan Vels (1 March 1867 – 20 April 1963) was a South African cricketer who played two first-class matches when he was 60 years old and lived until the age of 96. Life and career Cornelis Vels was born in Philippolis in Orange Free State. He made his first-class debut for Orange Free State against the touring MCC in November 1927, aged 60 years and 269 days. He opened the bowling with Shunter Coen and took no wickets for 106 off 21 overs as the MCC scored 579 for 7 on their way to an innings victory. He played once again for Orange Free State a few weeks later in a friendly match against Natal. In a match ruined by rain he bowled five overs, again taking no wickets. In his two matches he batted at number 10 or 11 and made six runs for once out. Vels was 60 years 291 days old when he played his last first-class match. First-class Cricket
First-class cricket, along with List A cricket and Twenty20 cricket, is one of the highest-standard forms of cricket. A first-class match is of three or more days scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. Matches must allow for the teams to play two innings each, although in practice a team might play only one innings or none at all. The etymology of "first-class cricket" is unknown, but the term was used loosely before it acquired official status in 1895, following a meeting of leading English clubs. At a meeting of the International Cricket Council, Imperial Cricket Conference (ICC) in 1947, it was formally defined on a global basis. Philippolis
Philippolis is a town in the Free State province of South Africa. The town is the birthplace of writer and intellectual Sir Laurens van der Post, actress Brümilda van Rensburg and Springboks rugby player Adriaan Strauss. It is regarded as one of the first colonial settlements in the Free State. History The London Missionary Society founded Philippolis in 1823 as a mission station serving the local Griqua people. At first, the area was referred to as Southern Transorangia. The town takes its name from Dr John Philip, who was the superintendent of the Society from 1819 to 1849. Orange Free State
The Orange Free State ( ; ) was an independent Boer-ruled sovereign republic under British suzerainty in Southern Africa during the second half of the 19th century, which ceased to exist after it was defeated and surrendered to the British Empire at the end of the Second Boer War in 1902. Shunter Coen
Stanley Keppel "Shunter" Coen (14 October 1902 – 28 January 1967) was a South African cricketer who played in two Test matches in 1927–28. He was born in Heilbron, Orange Free State, and died in Durban, Natal. First-class cricket Coen was a right-handed middle-order or opening batsman and a right-arm occasional bowler, Coen had a long career in South African domestic cricket from 1921–22 to 1938–39, but made a particular impact in only two seasons. Across the 1920s, Coen's first-class cricket was for Orange Free State, usually one of the weaker South African domestic sides; he did little for them in his first three seasons, but in 1924–25, he made 60 in the match against an even weaker Griqualand West team. KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Team
KwaZulu-Natal (formerly Natal) is the first-class cricket team that represents the province of KwaZulu-Natal (formerly Natal) in South Africa in the CSA 4-Day Domestic Series (previously the Currie Cup). KwaZulu-Natal is the only team that did not merge with another during the 2004 restructuring, but were rebranded as the Dolphins. However, the KwaZulu-Natal Inland cricket team was granted first-class status in 2006, and began competing in the CSA Provincial Competitions in 2006-2007, and were also represented by the Dolphins franchise. Ficksburg
Ficksburg is a town situated at the foot of the 1,750 meter high Imperani Mountain in Free State province, South Africa. The town was founded by General Johan Fick in 1867 who won the territory in the Basotho Wars. He laid out many erven and plots that could be bought at a reasonable price.
