Corcovado National Park (Chile)
Corcovado National Park is an preserved area of Valdivian temperate rainforest, high peaks, alpine lakes, and rivers in Chile's Los Lagos Region. This coastal park borders the Gulf of Corcovado to the west and includes the iconic volcanoes Corcovado (volcano), Corcovado and Yanteles. This preserved area has one public access trail along the Carretera Austral. History Corcovado National Park represents an innovative joint public/ private conservation effort. Corcovado Volcano
Corcovado Volcano () is a stratovolcano located about south of the mouth of the Yelcho River, in the Palena Province, Los Lagos Region, Chile. The glacially eroded volcano is flanked by Holocene cinder cones. The volcano's base has likely prehistoric lava flows that are densely vegetated. The most distinctive feature of this volcano is its stepped top, similar to that of Puntiagudo Volcano. At its foot lies a series of lakes. Corcovado dominates the landscape of the Gulf of Corcovado area and is visible from Chiloé Island, weather permitting. The volcano and the adjacent area form part of Corcovado National Park. The town of Chaitén is the main gateway to this protected area. Juan Emilio Cheyre
Juan Emilio Cheyre Espinosa (born October 10, 1947) is a retired Chilean Army General. He was Commander-in-Chief of the Chilean Army from 2002 to 2006. As Commander-in-Chief he attempted to distance the Army from former General Augusto Pinochet, and condemned the human rights abuses of Pinochet's dictatorship. In 1973 he handed over a two-year-old child, whose parents had been murdered by the army, to a nunnery. In 2003, Cheyre as Commander-in-Chief of the Army issued an historically relevant document titled "Chilean Army: End of a Vision," in which he stated that "never again" could the circumstances that led Chile to the collapse of its democracy be met. Cheyre was succeeded as Commander-in-Chief by Army General Óscar Izurieta Ferrer on March 10, 2006. He worked later as an academic at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. Douglas Rainsford Tompkins (March 20, 1943 – December 8, 2015) was an American businessman, conservationist, outdoorsman, philanthropist, filmmaker, and agriculturalist. He founded the North Face Inc, co-founded Esprit and various environmental groups, including the Foundation for Deep Ecology and Tompkins Conservation. Beginning in the mid-1960s, he and Susie Tompkins Buell (née Russell), his first wife, co-founded and ran two companies: the outdoor equipment and clothing company The North Face and the Esprit clothing company.
