Cora Alta Ray Corniea
Cora Alta Ray Corniea (1889–1958) was an American conservationist best known for her role in preserving the Cedar Bog at what is now known as the Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve in Minnesota. Corniea was referred to as "The Bird Woman of Cedar Bog." Personal life Born on October 10, 1889, in Albany, Missouri as Cora Alta Ray, Corniea cited her maternal grandparents, Samuel and Nancy Mize, and her paternal grandparents, Andrew and Rebecca Ray, for instilling her love of nature. Corneia lived in Kansas from 1900 to 1905, and moved to Minnesota in 1913. She married Dr. Albert Corniea on February 3, 1917, and they lived in Minneapolis for 35 years. Corniea died in Minneapolis on July 20, 1958. Work and legacy Corniea was a charter member of the Minnesota's Natural History Society. Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve
The Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve is an ecological research site located primarily in East Bethel, Minnesota in the counties of Anoka and Isanti on the northern edge of the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area. Name Originally the site was officially designated the ''Cedar Creek Forest'' which takes its name for Cedar Creek that winds through East Bethel. The bog where the site initially began was informally called by professors " Decodon Bog." The site was known as ''Cedar Creek Natural History Area'' until its change in 2007. Description Encompassing of native upland forests and prairie and lowland swamps and meadows, the site contains over 900 plots of long-term experimental research which evaluate plant competition and biodiversity. An oak savanna is a type of savanna (or lightly forested grassland), where oaks (''Quercus ''spp.) are the dominant trees. It is also generally characterized by an understory that is lush with grass and herb-related plants. The terms "oakery" or "woodlands" are also used commonly, though the former is more prevalent when referencing the Mediterranean area. Oak savannas typically exist in areas with low precipitation and feature poor soils. Predominant land uses include rangeland agriculture.
