Coppinger
Coppinger is a surname of Norse origin historically associated with Ireland and the counties of Suffolk and Kent in England, and the seaboard of Northern France. While there are various spellings in historical documents, after more standardised spellings became established in the C18th the main variant was between Coppinger and Copinger. Whether an individual chose to use one or two ps seems to have been a question of personal preference which thereafter became a fixed tradition in their descendants. James Coppinger
James Coppinger (born 18 January 1981) is an English former professional footballer who played as an attacking midfielder. He began his career at Newcastle United, making one appearance in the Premier League, and later spent two years at Exeter City, but is best known for his association with Doncaster Rovers, whom he represented over seventeen seasons between 2004 and his retirement in 2021. The only player ever to make over 600 appearances for Doncaster, he currently serves the club in a mentorship role. He is a former England under-16 international. Ruth Coppinger
Ruth Coppinger (born 18 April 1967) is an Irish politician and member of the Socialist Party. She was elected as a Teachta Dála (TD) in the Dublin West constituency in 2014. In the 2016 general election, she ran as a candidate for Anti-Austerity Alliance–People Before Profit and retained her seat in Dáil Éireann until 2020. She failed to retain her seat at the general election in February 2020. Political career Coppinger was a member of Fingal County Council for the Mulhuddart local electoral area from 2003 to 2014. She was co-opted to the council in 2003, replacing Joe Higgins. She was elected in 2004 and re-elected in 2009. José María Coppinger
José María Coppinger (April 5, 1773 – August 15, 1844) was a Spanish soldier who served in the infantry of the Royal Spanish Army ''(Ejército de Tierra)'' and governed East Florida (1816–1821) and several areas in Cuba including Pinar Del Rio, Bayamo, the ''Cuatro Villas'' (the towns of Trinidad, Santo Espiritu, Villa Clara, San Juan de los Remedios) and Trinidad at various times between 1801 and 1834. He was also a member of the Royal and Military Order of Saint Ferdinand and San Hermenegildo. William Coppinger (bishop)
Bishop William Coppinger (1753-1830) was an Irish Catholic priest, who served as Bishop of Cloyne and Ross, from 1791 until his death. Life William Coppinger was born on 20 May 1753 in County Cork, the son of Stephen and Joanna Coppinger. Prohibited by the Penal Laws from obtaining a liberal education at home, he studied successfully on the continent. He considered a military career and applied for a commission in the French army, but dissuaded by some friends, decided instead to train for the priesthood at the Irish College, Paris. He was ordained in 1780. Coppinger returned to Ireland becoming a curate at his home parish, and then parish priest first at Carrigaline, and then at Passage in County Cork. In 1786 Bishop Francis Moylan of Cork named Coppinger vicar-general of the diocese, and shortly thereafter arranged for Coppinger to be appointed coadjutor to Bishop Matthew McKenna of Cloyne. Sir Walter Coppinger
Sir Walter Coppinger (died 1639) was a member of the Irish nobility from County Cork, Ireland, who was a magistrate of Cork city, a lawyer, and a landlord. Coppinger came from one of the most prominent families in Cork city; though himself of Hiberno-Norse rather than Old English or Gaelic descent, he was hostile to the English settlement of Cork, and had a reputation for ruthlessness. Sir Walter Coppinger was the eldest son of James Coppinger, and the great grandson of Stephen Coppinger who was the first representative of the city of Cork in the Parliament of Ireland in 1560, and Mayor of Cork on two occasions, in 1564 and 1572. Sir Walter was a moneylender, and acquired many lands and properties from people who defaulted on mortgages provided by Sir Walter. Maurice Coppinger
Maurice Coppinger (1727– 6 October 1802) was an Irish barrister and politician, who sat in the Irish House of Commons for many years, and held the office of King's Serjeant.Hart p.167 His name is commemorated in Coppinger Row, a side street in central Dublin city; his townhouse was on South William Street nearby. In his own lifetime, he inspired the phrase "to be issued with a Coppinger", i.e. to be served with a writ from the Court of Chancery (Ireland). Despite his eminence in the legal world, he suffered from chronic money troubles in his later years, partly as a result of a lawsuit that he lost, and also as a result of his dismissal from the lucrative offices of Serjeant-at-law and standing counsel to the Revenue Commissioners. Barry Coppinger was the Cleveland Police and Crime Commissioner between 2012 and 2020. He was the inaugural holder the post and was elected on 15 November 2012, for the Labour Party. Coppinger's Court
Coppingers Court is a ruined four-storey fortified house dating from 1616, situated on private property approximately from the sea. It was built by Sir Walter Coppinger and located in Ballyvireen valley, west of Rosscarbery in County Cork, Ireland. The house has a rectangular centre flanked by two wings on the east and west, resulting in a total of 9 gables. History Sir Walter acquired the valley and surrounding lands from the previous owner, Fineen O'Driscoll, by foreclosing on a mortgage after advancing him a sum of money. The house was originally known as "Ballyverine Castle", and Sir Walter's original plans included transforming the immediate area into a market town, with the nearby Rowry river converted to a canal in order to navigate from nearby Milcove to his new town. Sir Walter died in 1639 and is buried in Christ Church, Cork. His surviving plans came to an end when the house was attacked during the Irish Rebellion of 1641 and badly damaged by fire. Richard William Coppinger, (11 October 1847 – 2 April 1910) was a British Navy surgeon and naturalist. (The entry for Coppinger erroneously gives his place of death as Farnham, Surrey.) Biography Richard William Coppinger was born in Dublin on 11 October 1847. He graduated M.D. from the Queen's University of Ireland in 1870. He was a surgeon on HMS ''Alert'', for the ship's Arctic expedition from 1875 to 1876 and the ship's expedition and Pacific cruise, including the Patagonian coast, Polynesia, and the Mascarene Islands, from 1878 to 1882. Whilst on HMS ''Alert'', he collected botanical specimens from Magellan Straits landfalls, Tahiti, Fiji, Australia, the Torres Strait Islands, Singapore, and the Seychelles, in addition to extensive zoological collections.
