Reginald Cooray
Reginald Cooray (12 November 1947 – 13 January 2023) was a Sri Lankan teacher and politician. He was a provincial chief minister, a government minister, and governor of the Northern Province. He was briefly governor of the Central Province in April 2018, his tenure lasting less than 24 hours, making it the shortest of any governorship in Sri Lankan history. Personal life and death Cooray was born on 12 November 1947. He was a Roman Catholic and a wealthy land owner. Cooray's wife died in July 2011. His daughter Muditha Sanjeewani died in December 2013. Cooray died of a heart attack on 13 January 2023, aged 75. Career Cooray was an English teacher by profession. He started his political career in Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP). Vernon Cooray is a Sri Lankan scientist who is an emeritus professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering at Uppsala University, Sweden. As a scientist he has concentrated on solving both physics and engineering problems related to lightning physics, lightning protection and physics of electrical discharges. This research work has resulted in more than 600 research publications. He was the Ph.D. thesis supervisor of more than thirty researchers, both at Uppsala and foreign universities, who are now actively engaged in lightning research and lightning protection in different parts of the world. Cissy Cooray
Cissy Cooray, OBE (8 June 1889 – 6 November 1965) was a Ceylonese social worker and the first woman to be appointed to the Senate of Ceylon. Career Cooray was a co-founder of the ''Lanka Mahila Samitiya'' in 1931, which has since become the country's largest women's voluntary organisation; she was a member for 35 years and the president for ten years between 1943 and 1953. She was considered a pioneer in the field of maternal and child health in Ceylon. In 1937, Cooray hosted Australian clubwoman Isobel Ritchie, on a visit to see the work of the Social Service League of Colombo. In 1941 she was appointed as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, for her work in social welfare services in Ceylon. Anuradha Cooray
Anuradha Indrajith Cooray (born March 24, 1978) is a Sri Lankan marathon runner. Cooray was a competitor at the 2004 Olympic games, finishing 30th out of 113 in the marathon with a time of 2:19:24. He won the gold medal in the marathon at the SAF games in Pakistan in 2004. He had previously been a 5000 and 10000 m runner. Cooray is Sri Lanka's national record holder in the men's marathon and 10,000 metres and brings back memories of K.A. Karunaratne. Cooray started his running career as a 5000m runner at Divulapitiya Central College. He joined the Sri Lankan army in 1999, coming under the brigadier Perry Liyanage. Thomas Benjamin Cooray (Sinhala language: තෝමස් බෙන්ජමින් කුරේ), O.M.I. (28 December 1901 – 29 October 1988) was a Sri Lankan cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church who served as the Archbishop of Colombo from 1947 to 1976, and was elevated to the cardinalate in 1965 by Pope Paul VI. Bulathsinghalage Sirisena Cooray, JP (25 April 1931 – 30 November 2021) was a Sri Lankan politician. Biography He was the Mayor of Colombo from 1979 to 1989 and was elected from Colombo to Parliament in the 9th parliamentary election in 1989. He was appointed Minister of Housing and Construction in the Premadasa cabinet. He had served as General Secretary of the United National Party during the tenure of party leader Ranasinghe Premadasa. He submitted nominations for the Colombo Municipal Council elections in 2006 as the Mayor, however his party nominations list was rejected by the election commission on a technicality. The independent party backed by Sirisena won the election and Uvais Mohamed Imitiyas became Mayor. His brother Nandasena Cooray was a one time Deputy Mayor of Colombo and was married to the sister of the former JVP leader Somawansa Amarasinghe.
