Coon GAA
Coon GAA was a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in Coon, County Kilkenny, Ireland. The club was primarily concerned with the game of hurling. History Hurling had been played in the Coon area since the early 1940s when the arrival of a new schoolteacher resulted in a minor team being established. A new curate arrived in the parish in 1947 and, under his influence, Coon GAA Club was established in 1948. After losing Kilkenny JHC finals to Mooncoin in 1961 and Thomastown in 1962, Coon finally made the breakthrough by capturing the title in 1967. This victory earned promotion to the Kilkenny SHC. Coon lined out in the top flight until regrading to the newly created Kilkenny IHC in 1973. The decision was a successful one as they claimed the title that year. The Kilkenny Intermediate Hurling Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as Michael Lyng Motors Intermediate Hurling Championship and abbreviated to the Kilkenny IHC) is an annual hurling competition organised by the Kilkenny County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association and contested by intermediate clubs in the county of Kilkenny in Ireland. Mick Lawler
Mick Lawler is an Irish former sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Coon. He played midfield in their victory in the 1967 Junior County final against Knocktopher. The 1973 Kilkenny Intermediate Hurling Championship was the ninth staging of the Kilkenny Intermediate Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Kilkenny County Board. The draw for the opening round fixtures took place on 9 April 1973. The championship began on 6 May 1973 and ended on 11 November 1973. The final was played on 11 November 1973 at Nowlan Park in Kilkenny, between Coon and Graignamanagh, in what was their first meeting in a final.
