Cooma Mail
The Cooma Mail was an Australian passenger train that operated from May 1889 until May 1986 between Central railway station, Sydney, Sydney and Cooma. History The ''Cooma Mail'' commenced operating following the opening of the line from Michelago to Cooma in May 1889. The service ran overnight departing Central railway station, Sydney, Sydney at 21:00 arriving in Cooma at 10:30 the following morning. In 1912, the service was upgraded to run as a passenger train throughout. It had previously operated as a mixed train south of Queanbeyan railway station, Queanbeyan, and accelerated departing Sydney at 20:25 and arriving at 07:00. In March 1927, a Canberra railway station, Canberra portion was added. In June 1981, the Sydney bound services was altered to operate as a daylight service departing Cooma at 08:50. The State Rail Authority, a former statutory authority of the Government of New South Wales, operated and maintained railways in the Australian state of New South Wales from July 1980 until December 2003. History The ''Transport Authorities Act 1980'' separated the functions of the Public Transport Commission (formerly responsible for all public transport) and established the State Rail Authority. The State Rail Authority assumed responsibility for trains, while the Urban Transit Authority responsibility for buses and ferries. In July 1982 a new colour scheme developed by Phil Belbin of red, yellow, orange and white was unveiled, which was commonly referred to as the "candy colours". Queanbeyan railway station is a heritage-listed railway station located on the Bombala railway line, Bombala line in New South Wales, Australia. It serves the town of Queanbeyan. History Queanbeyan station opened on 8 September 1887 when the Bombala railway line, Bombala line was extended from Bungendore railway station, Bungendore. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. The construction contract for the Bungendore to Michelago section was awarded to Alex Johnston on 27 May 1884. Mixed Train
A mixed train or mixed consist is a train that contains both passenger and freight cars or wagons. In some countries, the term refers to a freight train carrying various different types of freight rather a single commodity. Although common in the early days of railways, by the 20th century they were largely confined to branch lines with little traffic. Typically, service was slower, because mixed trains usually involved the shunting (rail), shunting (switching) of rolling stock at stops along the way. However, some earlier passenger expresses, which also hauled time-sensitive freight in covered goods wagons (boxcars), would now be termed mixed trains.
