Coolie (also spelled koelie, kouli, khuli, khulie, kuli, cooli, cooly, or quli) is a pejorative term used for low-wage labourers, typically those of Indian people, Indian or Chinese descent. The word ''coolie'' was first used in the 16th century by European traders across Asia. In the 18th century, the term more commonly referred to migrant Indian indenture system, Indian indentured labourers. In the 19th century, during the Colonial India, British colonial era, the term was adopted for the transportation and employment of Asian labourers via employment contracts on Sugar plantations in the Caribbean, sugar plantations formerly worked by enslaved Africans. The word has had a variety of negative implications. In modern-day English, it is usually regarded as offensive. ''Coolie'' (; ) is an upcoming Indian Tamil language, Tamil-language action thriller film directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. Produced by Kalanithi Maran's Sun Pictures, the film stars Rajinikanth, alongside Nagarjuna (actor), Nagarjuna, Upendra (actor), Upendra, Soubin Shahir, Sathyaraj, Shruti Haasan, Junior MGR, Reba Monica John, Monisha Blessy and Kaali Venkat. The film was officially announced in September 2023 under the tentative title ''Thalaivar 171'' as Rajinikanth's 171st film as a lead actor and the official title was announced in April 2024. ''Coolie'' (transl. Porter) is a 1983 Indian action comedy film, directed by Manmohan Desai and written by Kader Khan. The film stars Amitabh Bachchan as Iqbal Aslam Khan, a railway coolie, who was separated from his mother Salma (Waheeda Rehman) due to Zafar's (Kader Khan) obsession with her. This obsession causes the destruction of her family and her mental breakdown. Years later, fate unites her sons, Iqbal and Sunny (Rishi Kapoor) and they set out to save Salma from Zafar's captivity. The Indian indenture system was a system of indentured servitude, by which more than 1.6million workers from British India were transported to labour in European colonies as a substitute for Atlantic slave trade, slave labour, following the Abolitionism, abolition of the trade in the early 19th century. The system expanded after the abolition of slavery in the British Empire in Slavery Abolition Act 1833, 1833, in the French colonial empire, French colonies in 1848, and in the Dutch Empire in 1863. British Indian indentureship lasted until the 1920s.
