Coode Peninsula
The Coode Peninsula is a small peninsula on the inner side of the larger Malaspina Peninsula in the Sunshine Coast area of the South Coast of British Columbia, Canada, projecting into Malaspina Inlet just south of Okeover Inlet. Name origin According to Captain Walbran, the peninsula was named after Captain Trevenen Penrose Coode of , the flagship of Rear Admiral Joseph Denman, who was commander of the Royal Navy's Pacific Station from 1864 to 1866. Another name attribution is from Sir John Coode, nephew of Vice-Admiral Charles Vinicombe Penrose and first lieutenant of under Captain Pender Daniel Pender was a Royal Navy Staff Commander, later captain, who surveyed the Coast of British Columbia aboard , and from 1857 to 1870. Malaspina Peninsula
The Malaspina Peninsula is a peninsula in the northern Gulf of Georgia-Sunshine Coast region of British Columbia, Canada. It extends northwest from the town of Powell River, which lies near its isthmus, past the settlement of Lund, to Desolation Sound. This sound spans the opening of Toba Inlet, a fjord lying between Lund and the Discovery Islands to the west and northwest. The Malaspina Peninsula is mountainous and is the traditional territory of the Sliammon group of the Mainland Comox indigenous people. Like Malaspina Strait and the Malaspina Glacier further north in Alaska, the peninsula was named for Alessandro Malaspina, an Italian of noble birth in the Spanish navy who was among the many captains in the service of Spain who helped explore and chart the Alaska and British Columbia Coasts. Sunshine Coast (British Columbia)
The Sunshine Coast is a geographic subregion of the British Columbia Coast that generally comprises the regional districts of qathet and Sunshine Coast. John Thomas Walbran
John Thomas Walbran (1848 – 31 March 1913) was an English-Canadian ship's master and writer. Biography John Thomas Walbran was born in Ripon, England, in 1848. He became qualified as a ship's master in 1881. On the coast of British Columbia from 1888 to 1890 he was employed by the Canadian Pacific Navigation Company. From 1891 until retirement in 1904, he worked primarily on the Pacific Coast in the Georgian Bay Survey, subsequently renamed the Canadian Hydrographic Service. He was the first captain of the DGS ''Quadra''. He is best known for authorship of ''British Columbia Coast Names'' originally published in 1909, reprinted in 1971 and widely and frequently cited. Death John Thomas Walbran died at St. Joseph's Hospital on 31 March 1913 and was buried in Ross Bay Cemetery in Victoria, British Columbia. Joseph Denman
Vice Admiral Joseph Denman (23 June 1810 – 26 November 1874) was a British naval officer, most noted for his actions against the slave trade as a commander of HMS ''Wanderer'' of the West Africa Squadron. Early life Denman was born on 23 June 1810, the son of Thomas Denman, 1st Baron Denman, Lord Chief Justice and a noted abolitionist. Military career Joseph entered the Royal Navy on 7 April 1823, and was promoted to Lieutenant in 1831 and commander in 1835. In 1834, Lieutenant Joseph Denman commanded a prize crew aboard the captured slave ship ''Maria da Gloria''. He first sailed her to the Anglo-Brazilian Mixed Commission Court at Rio de Janeiro, which declined jurisdiction on the grounds that the ship was Portuguese, not Brazilian. Denman then had to sail back across the Atlantic to the Anglo-Portuguese court in Sierra Leone. Pacific Station
The Pacific Station was created in 1837 as one of the geographical military formations into which the Royal Navy divided its worldwide responsibilities. The South America Station was split into the Pacific Station and the South East Coast of America Station. History The British Pacific Squadron was established in 1813 to support British interests along the eastern shores of the Pacific Ocean at Valparaíso, Chile.
