Conway Coast And Western Railroad
The Conway Seashore Railroad was a South Carolina railroad that operated in the early 20th century. It ran from Conway, South Carolina southeast to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. History The Conway Seashore Railroad was chartered by the South Carolina General Assembly in 1899. It began operation in 1900 and in 1904 the name of the carrier was changed to the Conway Coast and Western Railroad. The Conway Seashore was bought by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad (ACL) in 1912, who had previously bought the Wilmington, Chadbourn and Conway Railroad in 1898. This gave the ACL a continuous route from their main line at Elrod, North Carolina to Myrtle Beach via Chadbourn, North Carolina and Conway, which was then known as their Conway and Myrtle Beach Branch. Atlantic Coast Line Railroad
The Atlantic Coast Line Railroad was a United States Class I railroad formed in 1900, though predecessor railroads had used the ACL brand since 1871. In 1967 it merged with long-time rival Seaboard Air Line Railroad to form the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad. Much of the original ACL network has been part of CSX Transportation since 1986. The Atlantic Coast Line served the Southeast, with a concentration of lines in Florida. Numerous named passenger trains were operated by the railroad for Florida-bound tourists, with the Atlantic Coast Line contributing significantly to Florida's economic development in the first half of the 20th century. Chessie System
Chessie System, Inc. was a holding company that owned the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O), the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O), the Western Maryland Railway (WM), and Baltimore and Ohio Chicago Terminal Railroad (B&OCT). Trains operated under the Chessie name from 1973 to 1987. Headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, the Chessie System was the creation of Cyrus S. Eaton and his protégé Hays T. Watkins, then president and chief executive officer of the C&O. A chief source of revenue for the Chessie System was coal mined in West Virginia. Another was the transport of auto parts and finished motor vehicles. The name "Chessie System" had been a popular nickname for the C&O since the 1930s, cemented with an advertising campaign that featured a sleeping kitten named Chessie. Pine Island, South Carolina
Pine Island is an unincorporated community in Horry County, South Carolina, United States. Pine Island began as an experimental farm in the early 1900s, when the train to Myrtle Beach had been chartered from Conway to the Pine Island area. The train would eventually run to Myrtle Beach a year later. A store was constructed in the area, which provided feed for animals, fresh meat, and eggs. A lumber mill was built, which provided wood for Myrtle Beach's first buildings and structures, including the Seaside Inn, Myrtle Beach's first hotel. The experimental farm was managed as a factory, as the farm was laid off in tracts and records were kept. The experimental farm failed and the landowner had to sell. Currently, the area of Pine Island has grown, constructing new residential developments, and a few industrial businesses.
