Contemplation (Kafka)
''Betrachtung'' (published in English as ''Meditation'' or ''Contemplation'') is a collection of eighteen short stories by Franz Kafka written between 1904 and 1912. It was Kafka's first published book, printed at the end of 1912 (with the publication year given as "1913") in the ''Rowohlt Verlag'' on an initiative by Kurt Wolff. Eight of these stories were published before under the title ''Betrachtungen'' ("Contemplations") in the bimonthly '' Hyperion''.Kafka, Franz. ''The Complete Stories.'' Peter Kuper (; born September 22, 1958) is an American alternative comics artist and illustrator, best known for his autobiographical, political, and social observations. Besides his contributions to the political anthology '' World War 3 Illustrated'', which he co-foundedNeil Gaiman, ed., The Best American Comics 2010 (Boston, New York: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2010), 321 in 1979 with Seth Tobocman, Kuper is best known for taking over '' Spy vs. Spy'' for ''Mad'' magazine, which he both wrote and drew from 1997 to 2022. Overview Kafka began keeping the diaries at the age of 25, as an attempt to provoke his stalled creativity, and kept writing in them until 1923, a year before his death. "Description of a Struggle" () is a short story by Franz Kafka. It contains the dialogues "Conversation with the Supplicant" ("Gespräch mit dem Beter") and "Conversation with the Drunk" ("Gespräch mit dem Betrunkenen"). Origins "Description of a Struggle" is one of Kafka's earliest stories that was not destroyed and is usually the earliest included in collections of his work. (His oldest surviving work of fiction is " Shamefaced Lanky and Impure in Heart", which he wrote a few years earlier and which only survived because it was included in a letter to his friend Oskar Pollak.) Sir John Malcolm Sabine Pasley, 5th Baronet, FBA (5 April 1926 – 4 March 2004), also known as Malcolm Pasley, was an eminent British philologist and literary scholar. ''The Complete Stories of Franz Kafka'' is a compilation of all of Franz Kafka, Kafka's short stories. With the exception of three novels (''The Trial'', ''The Castle (novel), The Castle'' and ''Amerika (Kafka novel), Amerika''), this collection includes all of his narrative work. The book was originally edited by Nahum Norbert Glatzer, Nahum N. Glatzer and published by Schocken Books in 1971. It was reprinted in 1995 with an introduction by John Updike.
