Consumer Protection Act, 1986
Consumer Protection Act 1986 (COPRA) was an Act by the Parliament of India elected to protect the interests of consumers in India. It was replaced by the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. It was made for the establishment of consumer councils and other authorities for the settlement of consumer's dispute and matters connected with it. The act was passed in Assembly in October 1986 and came into force on 24 December 1986 History of the Act Consumer rights in India were historically overlooked, leading to rampant exploitation of consumers by businesses. This necessitated the creation of a robust legislation to protect consumers from unfair practices, hence the 'Consumer Protection Act, 1986' was introduced. Consumer Protection Act, 2019
Consumer Protection Act, 2019 is an Act of the Parliament of India. It repeals and replaces the Consumer Protection Act, 1986. Introduction The Consumer Protection Act, 2019 was introduced in the Lok Sabha as a replacement of COPRA, 1986 on 8 July 2019 by the Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Ram Vilas Paswan. It was passed by Lok Sabha on 30 July 2019 and later passed in Rajya Sabha on 6 August 2019.' The bill received assent from the President Ram Nath Kovind on 9 August, and was notified in ''The Gazette of India'' on the same date. The Act came into effect by 20 July 2020, while certain other provisions of the Act like establishing the Central Consumer Protection Authority came into effect from 24 July 2020. (Medieval Latin for "Great Charter"), sometimes spelled Magna Charta, is a royal charter of rights agreed to by King John of England at Runnymede, near Windsor, on 15 June 1215. First drafted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Cardinal Stephen Langton, to make peace between the unpopular king and a group of rebel barons who demanded that the King confirm the Charter of Liberties, it promised the protection of church rights, protection for the barons from illegal imprisonment, access to swift and impartial justice, and limitations on feudal payments to the Crown, to be implemented through a council of 25 barons.
