Construction And Real Estate Journal
The ''Construction and Local Government Journal'' was a weekly publication, edited by George Augustine Taylor and, after his death in 1928, by his widow Florence Mary Taylor, on the subject of the building, construction and local government. It was later published as the ''Construction and Real Estate Journal.'' History The newspaper began life as the publication, ''Weekly Supplement to Building'' (18 Feb 1908 – 31 Aug. 1909); it then became ''Construction: weekly supplement to Building'' (7 Sept. 1909 – 3 Nov. 1913). It then became ''Construction and Local Government Journal'' (10 Nov. 1913 – 23 July 1930) and then ''Construction and Real Estate Journal'' (30 July 1930 – 11 May 1938) and then ''Construction'' (18 May 1938 – 16 May 1974). Digitisation Some of the versions of the paper have been digitised as part of the Australian Newspapers Digitisation Program project hosted by the National Library of Australia. George Augustine Taylor
George Augustine Taylor (1 August 1872 – 20 January 1928) was an Australian artist, journalist, and inventor. Life Taylor was born at Sydney in 1872. He began his working life articled to an architect, a Mr Hobbs. However, he first became known as an artist, and was a member of the Sydney Bohemian set in the 1890s, whose doings he was afterwards to record in his ''Those Were the Days'', a volume of reminiscences published in 1918. He contributed drawings to ''The Bulletin (Australian periodical), The Bulletin'', ''Worker'', ''Sunday Times'', ''Referee'', and ''London Punch'', but later became interested in aviation and radio, and did some remarkable work in connection with them. Taylor was a member of the Dawn and Dusk Club, an association of bohemians and intellectuals that included the writer Henry Lawson. Taylor married Florence Mary Taylor, Florence Mary Parsons in 1907. Florence Mary Taylor (; 29 December 1879 – 13 February 1969) was the first qualified female architect in Australia.De Vries, S. 1999. ''The Complete Book of Great Australian Women''. Harper Collins. She was also the first woman in Australia to fly in a heavier-than-air craft in 1909 and the first female member of the UK's Institution of Structural Engineers in 1926.
