Constanza Airport
Constanza National Airport (also known as Expedición 14 de Junio National Airport) is an airport for domestic flights serving Constanza, a town in the La Vega Province of the Dominican Republic. After undergoing renovations, it was reopened in May 2006 and renamed Expedicón 14 de Junio National Airport. It serves mostly tourist and cargo carriers. The airport is in low mountainous terrain east of Constanza. There is rising terrain in all quadrants. The Santiago VOR/DME (Ident: SGO) is located north-northeast of the airport. Constanza, Dominican Republic
Constanza is a town and municipality in La Vega Province, Dominican Republic. Located in the Cordillera Central region, Constanza is known for having the coldest temperature for a settlement on the island of Hispaniola, as well as the entire Caribbean. It is also the Dominican Republic's highest settlement; however, it is not the highest settlement on Hispaniola, as Kenscoff in Haiti is slightly higher in elevation, at 1,504 m (4836 ft). History The name of Constanza has its origin in the legend the daughter of a local Taíno chief who lived in the valley. Constanza was a sparsely populated area, though several explorers knew the valley in colonial times, and there was a settler named Victoriano Velano who brought European agriculture and ranching culture to the area in 1750. La Vega Province
La Vega () is a province of the Dominican Republic. Until 1992 it included what is now Monseñor Nouel province. History The first settlement made by Christopher Columbus in the area was on December 8, 1494. Its initial economic development was based on gold mining. In the early 16th century, it had a cathedral, plus two convents, the fort, a building that functioned as a hospital, and administration buildings. In La Vega the first coin was minted and the first merchants settled. It is also the site of one of the mayor battles between Spaniards and indigenous people. On December 2, 1562, the city was destroyed by an earthquake, being moved to the southern bank of the Camú River. VOR/DME
In radio navigation, a VOR/DME is a radio beacon that combines a VHF omnidirectional range (VOR) with a distance-measuring equipment (DME). The VOR allows the receiver to measure its bearing to or from the beacon, while the DME provides the slant distance between the receiver and the station. Together, the two measurements allow the receiver to compute a position fix. The VOR system was first introduced in the 1930s, but didn't enter significant commercial use until the early 1950s. It became much more practical with the introduction of low-cost Solid state (electronics), solid state receivers in the 1960s. DME was a modification of World War II-era navigation systems like Gee-H, and began development in 1946. Punta Cana International Airport is a privately owned commercial airport in Punta Cana, eastern Dominican Republic. The airport was built with open-air terminals and roofs covered in palm fronds.
