The Conservative Co-operative Movement was a political organisation promoting co-operatives and co-operative ideals within the British Conservative Party (UK), Conservative Party. The organisation advocated for "alternative models of capitalism", though it faced criticism within the wider British co-operative movement, co-operative movement which has traditionally been left leaning, with a history of affiliation with the Labour Party (UK), Labour Party through the Co-operative Party. ''Co-op News'' is a UK-based monthly news magazine and website for the global co-operative movement. First published in Manchester in 1871 as ''The Co-operative News'', the paper is the world's oldest co-operative newspaper. Originally a weekly newspaper, the paper moved to being published fortnightly in 2006, and finally monthly in 2017. Recent years have also seen the newspaper re-brand and move to its current news magazine format. The paper is based in Holyoake House, Manchester and is published by the Co-operative Press, a consumer co-operative whose members are the subscribers of the paper. In 1883 the paper began publishing a Women's Corner, edited by Alice Acland. This fomented the establishment of the Women's League for the Spread of Co-operation later that year. Alexander Jesse Norman (born 23 June 1962) is a British Conservative Party politician serving as Minister of State for Decarbonisation and Technology since October 2022. He previously served as Minister of State for the Americas and the Overseas Territories from September to October 2022. He served as Financial Secretary to the Treasury from 2019 to 2021 and has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Hereford and South Herefordshire since 2010. Norman was a director of Barclays before leaving the City in 1997 to research and teach at University College London. 2010 United Kingdom General Election
The 2010 United Kingdom general election was held on Thursday 6 May 2010, with 45,597,461 registered voters entitled to vote to elect members to the House of Commons. The election took place in 650 constituencies across the United Kingdom under the first-past-the-post system. The election resulted in a large swing to the Conservative Party similar to that seen in 1979, the last time a Conservative opposition had ousted a Labour government. The Labour Party lost the 66-seat majority it had previously enjoyed, but no party achieved the 326 seats needed for a majority.
