Conscript Band Of The Finnish Defence Forces
The Conscript Band of the Finnish Defence Forces ( fi, Puolustusvoimien varusmiessoittokunta) is a military band founded in Hamina in 1990 where it was a company-level unit in the Kymi Anti-Aircraft Regiment. In 1996, the Band was transferred to the Häme Regiment in Lahti as a company-level unit in the Military Music School. At the beginning of 2015, the Conscript Band began operations in a new unit at the Hattula Armoured Brigade as the Häme Regiment, was discontinued due to the national defence reform. Conscript musicians are accepted on the basis of auditions. About 300 men and women apply every year, out of which are chosen roughly a hundred gifted young players of wind, string and percussion as well as band musicians who specialise in popular music. Media and communications experts as well as sound and light technicians also serve in the Conscript Band. Conscription In Finland
Conscription in Finland is part of a general compulsion for national military service for all adult males ( fi, maanpuolustusvelvollisuus; sv, totalförsvarsplikt) defined in the section 127 of the Constitution of Finland. Conscription can take the form of military or of civilian service. According to Finnish Defence Forces 2011 data, slightly under 80% of Finnish males turned 30 had entered and finished the military service. The number of female volunteers to annually enter armed service had stabilized at approximately 300. The service period is 165 days, 255 days, or 347 days for the rank and file conscripts and 347 days for conscripts trained as NCOs or reserve officers. The length of civilian service is always twelve months. Those electing to serve unarmed in duties where unarmed service is possible serve either nine or twelve months, depending on their training. Kaartin Soittokunta
The Guards Band ( fi, Kaartin soittokunta; sv, Gardets musikkår) is the premier band of the Finnish Defence Forces. Established in Parola on April 1, 1819, it is the oldest of the six Finnish military bands as well as the oldest continuously operating professional musical organization in Finland. The Guards Band is officially the Representative Band of the President of the Republic of Finland. As of 2022, it consists of 42 musicians led by Senior Conductor Timo Kotilainen and Conductor Aino Koskela. The Guards Band performs in over 100 events every year, including state visits, military parades, state dinners, concerts and the Independence Day Reception at the Presidential Palace.
