Premise In a Nova Scotian fishing village, Nelly and Fred, childhood sweethearts, discover that Ben, a hunchbach fisherman, has been stealing the lobster catch. Nelly also discovers that Ben is the illegitimate son of Aunt Boo, Nelly's adoptive mother, married to Caleb. Nelly and Ben become friends and then lovers. Norman Thaddeus Vane born Norman Thatteus Vein (July 7, 1928 – May 2, 2015) was a screenwriter, producer, playwright and film director. He served as writer for the 1968 film '' Mrs. Brown, You've Got a Lovely Daughter'', and in the subsequent year was writer and associate producer of the movie ''Lola''. He wrote the screenplay for the 1972 film, '' 1931: Once Upon a Time in New York''. Vane went on to direct the 1983 film, '' Frightmare'', and continue contributing to writing films including '' The Black Room'' in 1984. Early life Born Jewish, Vane converted to Roman Catholicism when he was 18. He spent one year in the United States Merchant Marine and two years in the US Air Force at Moody Air Force Base in Georgia. He attended Columbia University on the G.I. Bill. Career Vane's first play, "The Penguin", opened Off-Broadway in 1952 starring Martin Landau, to stellar reviews. His Broadway debut, "Harbor Lights", ran for only four performances. Welbeck Film Distributors Ltd was a British film production company associated with the Rank Organisation. Sidney Box was a director until he quit in September 1959, being replaced by Peter Rogers. Sydney Box
Frank Sydney Box (29 April 1907 – 25 May 1983) was a British film producer and screenwriter, and brother of British film producer Betty Box. In 1940, he founded the documentary film company Verity Films with Jay Lewis. He produced and co-wrote the screenplay, with his then wife director Muriel Box, for '' The Seventh Veil'' (1945), which received the 1946 Oscar for best original screenplay. Sydney and Muriel married in 1935, had a daughter Leonora the following year, and divorced in 1969. Gainsborough Studios The couple were hired after the war by the Rank Organisation to run Gainsborough Studios. They disapproved of the Gainsborough melodramas which had been the studio's major successes for several years, and switched production to a broader range of more "realistic" films with mixed results.
