Route 164 is a minor state highway in southeastern Connecticut, United States, running from Route 2 in Preston through the village of Preston City to Route 138 in Griswold just south of the borough of Jewett City. Route description Route 164 begins as Preston Plains Road at an intersection with Route 2 in the southeastern portion of the town of Preston. It runs for about three miles (5 km) through rural Preston until it reaches Preston City, where it has a junction with Route 165. From here, the road becomes known as Jewett City Road, continuing north for towards the town of Griswold. In Griswold, the road name changes to Preston Road, continuing north for until the interchange with I-395 (at Exit 22). Route 164 continues for another beyond the interchange to end at Route 138 just south of the borough of Jewett City. Preston is a town in New London County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 4,788 at the 2020 census. The town includes the villages of Long Society, Preston City, and Poquetanuck. History In 1686, Thomas Parke, Thomas Tracy, and several others petitioned for and were granted by the Connecticut General Court authority to establish a plantation seven miles square to the east of Norwich and north of New London and Stonington. It is a primary state route, with a limited-access freeway section connecting Hartford to Norwich and following surface roads to Stonington. The entire freeway section of Route 2 is also known as the Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Highway. Route description Route 2 begins as a continuation of State Street (just east of Columbus Blvd) near Interstate 91 in downtown Hartford. It starts out heading east toward East Hartford. It is one of several New England state highways that travel through three states while keeping their number designation. The route begins in Sprague at Route 97. From its western terminus up to the junction with Interstate 395 in Griswold, the road functions as a collector road.
