John Evans Hill (February 21, 1945 – January 12, 2015) was an American designer of military board wargames, as well as rules for miniature wargaming. He is best known as the designer of the Avalon Hill board game ''Squad Leader'' and the American Civil War miniatures game ''Johnny Reb''. He was inducted into the Charles Roberts Awards Hall of Fame. Early life John Evans Hill never knew his biological father, John T. Hill, who was killed in action during World War II while his mother Marian Jane Hill was pregnant. John Evans Hill was born on February 21, 1945, in Chicago and grew up in Elmhurst, Illinois. When Hill was three years old, his mother married Edward F. Whitley, who became the man Hill identified as his father. ''Bar-Lev'', subtitled "The Yom-Kippur War of 1973", is a board wargame published by Conflict Games in 1974, only months after the end of the Yom Kippur War. The game simulates battles on the two major fronts of the war: the Golan Heights and the Suez Canal. The game proved very popular, and a second edition was published by Game Designers' Workshop (GDW) in 1977. Background On 6 October 1973, a coalition of Arab nations jointly launched a surprise attack against Israel on the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur. Egyptian forces crossed the Suez Canal while Syrian forces attacked the Golan Heights. Tet Offensive
The Tet Offensive was a major escalation and one of the largest military campaigns of the Vietnam War. The Viet Cong (VC) and North Vietnamese People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) launched a surprise attack on 30 January 1968 against the forces of the South Vietnamese Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN), the United States Armed Forces and their allies. It was a campaign of surprise attacks against military and civilian command and control centers throughout South Vietnam. The name is the truncated version of the Lunar New Year festival name in Vietnamese, Tết Nguyên Đán, with the offense chosen during a holiday period as most ARVN personnel were on leave. ''Battle for Hue'' is a board wargame published by Simulations Design Corporation (SDC) in 1973 in games, 1973 that simulates the Battle of Huế, battle for the city of Huế during the 1968 Tet Offensive of the Vietnam War. It was later reissued by Mayfair Games as ''Hue''. Background On 30 January 1968, the forces of North Vietnam launched the Tet Offensive, a large number of surprise attacks against targets throughout South Vietnam in an effort to foment unrest, trigger desertions in the South Vietnamese forces, and cause a popular uprising that would bring down the South Vietnamese government. However, after the initial shock and confusion, South Vietnamese and American forces responded, and most of the PAVN/VC attacks were quickly repelled with great losses. However, the PAVN/VC offensive against the ancient capital city of Huế was considered a key objective of the Tet Offensive, and fighting for control of the city continued for over a month.
