Conference Of The Birds (Dave Holland Album)
''Conference of the Birds'' is an album by the Dave Holland Quartet, recorded on 30 November 1972 and released on ECM the following year—Holland's debut as bandleader and fourth project for the label. The quartet features alto saxophonist Anthony Braxton, tenor saxophonist Sam Rivers, and percussionist Barry Altschul. Background Holland and Altschul first played together during 1970 in a trio with pianist Chick Corea, recording the album '' The Song of Singing'' in April of that year. In August, Braxton joined the group, forming the short-lived Circle quartet. David Holland (born 1 October 1946) is an English double bassist, bass guitarist, cellist, composer and bandleader who has been performing and recording for five decades. John Michael Erlewine (; born July 18, 1941) is an American musician, astrologer, photographer, publisher, and Internet entrepreneur who founded the music online database site AllMusic (previously known as All Music Guide) in 1991. Career Erlewine has had several careers. As a musician, he was active in the Michigan folk scene in the late 1950s and early 1960s. In 1961, he hitchhiked with Bob Dylan, and traveled to Greenwich Village in Lower Manhattan, New York; Venice, a Los Angeles neighborhood; and San Francisco. He and his brother Dan began a blues band called the Prime Movers, which regularly played in Chicago; other members included "Blue" Gene Tyranny (Robert Sheff). Stuart Nicholson (born 8 January 1948) is a British jazz historian, biographer, music critic, journalist, and academic. A recognized expert on the history of jazz, he has penned several books on jazz history and several biographies on jazz luminaries, including Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and Duke Ellington.
