Concussion Ensemble
Concussion Ensemble were an American post-rock group formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1992. It consisted of three drummers, one percussionist (playing bedpan, horseshoe, pipes and other found objects), two guitarists and a bass player. Their music was completely instrumental and placed a strong emphasis on rhythm. The ensemble was short lived, only releasing a single and one full-length album. Other material was recorded but never officially issued. Most of the band members went on to form Coronet Premiers, another instrumental project which lessened their focus on percussion. Since 1990, percussionists Terry Donahue and Ken Winokur have formed two-thirds of the group Alloy Orchestra. Math Rock
Math rock is a style of progressive and indie rock with roots in bands such as King Crimson and Rush as well as 20th-century minimal music composers such as Steve Reich. It is characterized by complex, atypical rhythmic structures (including irregular stopping and starting), counterpoint, odd time signatures, angular melodies, and extended, often dissonant, chords. Post-rock
Post-rock is a form of experimental rock characterized by a focus on exploring textures and timbre over traditional rock song structures, chords, or riffs. Post-rock artists are often instrumental, typically combining rock instrumentation with electronics. The genre emerged within the indie and underground music scene of the 1980s and early 1990s. However, due to its abandonment of rock conventions, it often bears little resemblance musically to contemporary indie rock, borrowing instead from diverse sources including ambient, electronica, jazz, krautrock, dub, and minimalist classical. Artists such as Talk Talk and Slint have been credited with producing foundational works in the style in the early 1990s. Bedpan
A bedpan or bed pan is a receptacle used for the toileting of a bedridden patient in a health care facility, and is usually made of metal, glass, ceramic, or plastic. A bedpan can be used for both urinary and fecal discharge. Many diseases can confine a patient to bed, necessitating the use of bedpans, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, stroke, and dementia. Additionally, many patients may be confined to a bed temporarily as a result of a temporary illness, injury, or surgery. Bedpans are usually constructed of stainless steel, which is easy to clean and durable, but may be cold, hard, and uncomfortable to use. Also, the supporting area of some products is very small, and prolonged use can cause pressure ulcers. To solve these problems, ergonomic bedpans have been developed, which support the patient with a larger area of less-conductive plastic. Alloy Orchestra
The Alloy Orchestra was a musical ensemble based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States, that performed its own accompaniments to silent films of the classic movie era. Performing on an unusual collection of found objects (horseshoes, plumbing pipes, and a bedpan comprising their so-called "rack of junk"), homemade instruments, accordion, clarinet, musical saw, and a sampling synthesizer, the group scored and performed with 40 feature length silent films or collections of shorts. The group is often credited with having helped revitalize the art of silent film accompaniment. Percussionist Ken Winokur and keyboardist Caleb Sampson founded the group on June 12, 1985 to accompany a theatrical production of Rainer Werner Fassbinder's ''Marilyn Monroe vs. the Vampires''.
