The Concordia Blade-Empire is a local newspaper for Concordia, Kansas. It is the official newspaper for Cloud County, Kansas. The paper publishes five days a week, Monday through Friday. History The ''Concordia Blade-Empire'' has a rich history of newspaper publication in the county. The paper today has its roots in two separate newspapers. (Several sources, including Janet Pease Emerey's book on the history of Concordia claim a third newspaper, ''The Republican'', merged and/or was purchased by ''The Republican Valley Empire''). The Republican Valley Empire The Concordia Blade-Empire was first published in Clyde as ''The Republican Valley Empire'' and was the first newspaper published in the county. Concordia, Kansas
Concordia is a city in and the county seat of Cloud County, Kansas, United States. It is located along the Republican River in the Smoky Hills region of the Great Plains in North Central Kansas. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 5,111. Concordia is home of the Cloud County Community College and the Nazareth Convent and Academy. History 19th century Concordia holds the distinction of being elected the county seat before the town was created. The founder of the town, James M. Hagaman had created a complete layout of the town on paper including streets, blocks, courthouse, and parks. Clyde is a city in Cloud County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 694. It is located east of Concordia along state highway K-9. History Clyde was laid out in 1867, making it the oldest town in Cloud County. It was named after the River Clyde in Scotland, or according to another source, it was named for Clyde, Ohio (which also is named indirectly for the River Clyde). Henry Buckingham (American Publisher)
Henry Buckingham (May 28, 1830 – January 25, 1916) was an American newspaper publisher and community promoter in Cloud County, Kansas. He is widely regarded as being the first to publish a newspaper in the county and makes that claiin an article written by him that was published in 1894. James Manney Hagaman
James Manney Hagaman (1830 – January 18, 1904) was a lawyer, land agent, newspaper editor, and the founder of Concordia, Kansas. He and his wife settled in what is now Cloud County in 1860. In addition to founding the town of Concordia, he is credited with leading the movement to separate what was then Shirley Township from Washington County in 1866. Political career In 1866, the people of Shirley Township sent Hagaman to Governor of Kansas Samuel J. Crawford with the petition requesting the right to organize as a county. The governor granted permission and Shirley Township became Shirley County (later "Cloud" County). Hagaman was elected county clerk and promptly became a candidate to be the first to represent Shirley County in the Kansas House of Representatives, losing to John B. Rupe.
