Concert For Democracy In China
The Concert for Democracy in China () was a benefit concert held in Hong Kong in support of the students involved in the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests. The concert was held on May 27, 1989, at the Happy Valley Racecourse on Hong Kong Island. The event lasted for 12 hours and raised over (1.5 million US dollars) for the students in Beijing. Event The event was hosted by James Wong, Phillip Chan, Eric Tsang, and John Shum. Shum stated in a later interview that all the performers enlisted voluntarily and were not invited. Sing Pao Daily News reported that the event was attended by nearly one million people, while Ta Kung Pao reported around 500,000 participants. Other estimates state the event was attended by around 200,000 people. Happy Valley Racecourse
The Happy Valley Racecourse is one of the two racecourses for horse racing and is a tourist attraction in Hong Kong. It is located in Happy Valley on Hong Kong Island, surrounded by Wong Nai Chung Road and Morrison Hill Road. The capacity of the venue is 55,000. History It was first built in 1845 to provide horse racing for the British people in Hong Kong. The area was previously swampland, but the only flat ground suitable for horse racing on Hong Kong Island. To make way for the racecourse, Hong Kong Government prohibited rice growing by villages in the surrounding area. The first race ran in December 1846. Over the years, horse racing became more and more popular among the Chinese residents. On 26 February 1918, a temporary grandstand collapsed, knocking over hot food stalls that set bamboo matting ablaze. The ensuing fire killed at least 590 people. Ann Mui
Ann Mui Oi-fong (梅愛芳) (10 December 1959 – 16 April 2000) was a Hong Kong singer and actress. Career Born on 10 December 1959 in China, Mui experienced much hardship in her childhood. Her father died when she was very young and her mother, Tam Mei-kam, raised four children alone. Like her sister Anita, Ann had a dramatic contralto singing voice, which is a rarity in Chinese pop music. Despite not being twins, both Ann and Anita's singing voices were strikingly similar, with the only way to tell them apart was the hand in which they hold the microphone. She is best remembered for her supporting roles in many movies, especially Jackie Chan's ''Police Story 2''. Ann Mui died of cervical cancer in 2000, as would Anita three years later. Zhang Lu (; January 21, 1932 – January 26, 2009), often written Chang Loo, was a Chinese singer and actress, known as a pioneer in Chinese pop beginning in the 1940s. Biography She was born Zhang Xiuying (张秀英) in Suzhou in 1932. Her family moved to Shanghai when she was a young child. Cally Kwong Mei-wan (born 24 December 1962) is a Hong Kong singer. She entered the entertainment industry through the 1982 Miss Hong Kong beauty pageant as the first runner-up. William Tung Biu () (March 30, 1933 in Hong Kong — February 22, 2006) was a Hong Kong actor and horse racing commentator. Tung started off as a jockey with his family racing horse stable.
