Conceição (Horta)
Conceição is a ''freguesia'' ("civil parish") in the municipality of Horta in the Portuguese Azores. The population in 2011 was 1,138, in an area of 3.08 km². It is the second smallest parish within the administration of Horta. History The settlement of the area that became known as ''Nossa Senhora da Conceição'' was first attributed to the Flemish nobleman Joss van Aard (which was later transliterated into Portuguese as ''José da Terra'', literally ''Joseph of the Earth/Land''), where he made his home, cultivated a small parcel, and planted fruit trees on the edge of ''Ribeira dos Flamengos'' (''Ravine of the Flemings''): :''"...who settle along a ravine, today named Ribeira da Conceição, in virtue of the chapel to this invocation that he constructed..."'' Faial Island
Faial Island (), also known as Fayal Island, is a Portugal, Portuguese island of the Central Group or ''Grupo Central'' of the Azores, in the Atlantic Ocean. The Capelinhos volcano is the westernmost point of the island and is considered the westernmost point of Europe other than the Monchique Islet. The largest town on the island is Horta, Azores, Horta with a population of approximately 7,000 inhabitants. The Residence of Pilar () is a Baroque-era residence, now in complete ruins, on ''Lomba do Pilar'' in the freguesia, civil parish of Conceição (Horta), Conceição, municipality of Horta (Azores), Horta, in the Portugal, Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. The residence was one of the few formal ''solares'' or estate homes located on the island of Faial Island, Faial, that was abandoned, and later destroyed in a fire during the 20th century. History Pilar was the late 18th century residence of Manuel Inácio de Souza Sarmento, a rich politician in the municipal council of Horta and property-owner. He inherited from his father, brother and father-in-law a vast inheritance that he parlayed into property on the island, becoming a self-made millionaire in the process. Faial-Pico Channel
The Faial-Pico Channel () is an long channel that separates the islands of Faial and Pico in the central group of the archipelago of the Azores. The strait is divided into various depressions, calderas and micro-systems, referred to as ''Baixas''. Geography The Baixa do Norte is located from ''Ponta da Espalamaca'', at a depth of approximately , to a depth reaching below sea level. The leading edge of the ''Baixa do Norte'' reef includes a series of large rocky outcrops, of less than in size. Considered a minor reef, the ''Baixa do Norte'' has been used by some fishers, who extended their catches from the ''Baixa da Barca''. The ''Baixa'' is characterized by peaks at the depth, with large blocks of rock and a fishery of considerable dimension. Military Battery Of Espalamaca
The Military Battery of Espalamaca (), also known as the ''Position of Espalamaca'' () or the ''Fort of Espalamaca'' (), is located over the promontory of Espalamaca, Freguesia (Portugal), civil parish of Conceição (Horta), Conceição, Concelho, municipality of Horta (Azores), Horta, in the Portugal, Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. History The fortifications were constructed in 1941, during the Second World War, in order to defend the port of Horta and the Faial-Pico Channel, channel between Faial and Pico, anchorage for ships and transiting Allied forces. It was built in order to work in conjunction with the artillery batteries of Monte da Guia and anti-aircraft battery at Monte Carneiro.
