Comrie (crater)
Comrie is a lunar impact crater situated on the rugged far side of the Moon, beyond the western limb, making it invisible from Earth. It is located in a region surrounded by other notable craters, with Ohm to the south-southwest, Shternberg to the southwest, and Parenago to the northeast. Comrie is the central member of a unique formation consisting of three connected craters. The northern part of Comrie is attached to a slightly smaller crater, sharing a straight rim between them. The southern portion of Comrie's rim merges with the northern part of a larger, heavily worn crater. This interaction has caused significant erosion, leaving only a portion of Comrie's original rim intact, particularly along its southern extent. Inside the crater, there are several smaller craters. Lunar Orbiter 5
Lunar Orbiter 5, the last of the "Lunar Orbiter series", was designed to take additional Project Apollo, Apollo and Surveyor program, Surveyor landing site photography and to take broad survey images of unphotographed parts of the Moon's far side. It was also equipped to collect selenodetic, radiation intensity, and micrometeoroid impact data and was used to evaluate the Manned Space Flight Network tracking stations and Apollo Orbit Determination Program. Parenago (crater)
Parenago is an impact crater on the Moon's far side, behind the eastern limb. Nearly attached to the east-southeastern outer rim of Parengo is the crater Berkner. To the south-southwest lies Comrie. This is a worn and eroded crater formation. Attached to the northern outer rim are the satellite craters Parenago W and Parenago Z. Three small craters lie prominently along the edge the inner wall in the southeast quadrant of the interior floor. The floor is otherwise relatively level and is marked by only a few tiny craterlets. Ray System
In planetary geology, a ray system comprises radial streaks of fine '' ejecta'' thrown out during the formation of an impact crater, looking somewhat like many thin spokes coming from the hub of a wheel. The rays may extend for lengths up to several times the diameter of their originating crater, and are often accompanied by small secondary craters formed by larger chunks of ejecta. Ray systems have been identified on the Moon, Earth ( Kamil Crater), Mercury, and some moons of the outer planets. Originally it was thought that they existed only on planets or moons lacking an atmosphere, but more recently they have been identified on Mars in infrared images taken from orbit by '' 2001 Mars Odyssey''s thermal imager. Shternberg (crater)
Shternberg is an eroded lunar impact crater on the Moon's far side. It lies just to the west-northwest of the crater Ohm, and is completely covered by higher-albedo material from the ray system that surrounds Ohm. To the west-southwest of Shternberg is Weyl, and to the west-northwest is Comstock. Leslie Comrie
Leslie John Comrie FRS (15 August 1893 – 11 December 1950) was an astronomer and a pioneer in mechanical computation. Life Leslie John Comrie was born in Pukekohe (south of Auckland), New Zealand, on 15 August 1893. He attended Auckland University College (part of the University of New Zealand) from 1912 to 1916, graduating with BA and MA degrees with Honours in Chemistry. During World War I, despite severe deafness, he saw action in France with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, and lost his left leg in February 1918 to a British shell. While convalescing, he started using a mechanical calculator and went on to modify commercial calculators for specific projects. Having joined while in school in New Zealand, Comrie was eventually the first director (1920–1922) of the Computing Section of the British Astronomical Association. Ohm (crater)
Ohm is a lunar impact crater that is located on the far side of the Moon. It lies to the south of the crater Comrie, and the satellite crater Comrie K is attached to Ohm's northeastern rim. To the northwest is the larger Shternberg, and to the southwest is Kamerlingh Onnes. This crater is located at the origin of a ray system that extends for several hundred kilometers across the surrounding lunar terrain. The exterior surface for about 20–30 km is relatively free of the ray material, but beyond that perimeter is a skirt of higher albedo, with streaks extending to the northwest, east-northeast, and southwards. The crater is part of the Copernican System. The outer rim of Ohm is sharply defined, except at the southern end where the edge is somewhat irregular.
