Computing In Science And Engineering
''Computing in Science & Engineering'' (CiSE) is a bimonthly technical magazine published by the IEEE Computer Society. It was founded in 1999 from the merger of two publications: Computational Science & Engineering (CS&E) and Computers in Physics (CIP), the first published by IEEE and the second by the American Institute of Physics (AIP). The founding editor-in-chief was George Cybenko, known for proving one of the first versions of the universal approximation theorem of neural networks. The magazine is interdisciplinary and covers topics such as numerical simulation, modeling, and data analysis and visualization. CiSE aims to provide its readers with practical information on the latest developments in computational methods and their applications in science and engineering. George Cybenko
George V. Cybenko is the Dorothy and Walter Gramm Professor of Engineering at Dartmouth and a fellow of the IEEE and SIAM. Education Cybenko obtained his BA in mathematics from the University of Toronto in 1974 and received his PhD from Princeton in applied mathematics of electrical and computer engineering in 1978 under Bede Liu. Work Cybenko served as an advisor for the Defense Science Board and the Air Force Scientific Advisory Board, among several other government panels. In the mathematical theory of artificial neural networks, universal approximation theorems are theorems of the following form: Given a family of neural networks, for each function f from a certain function space, there exists a sequence of neural networks \phi_1, \phi_2, \dots from the family, such that \phi_n \to f according to some criterion. That is, the family of neural networks is dense in the function space. The most popular version states that feedforward networks with non-polynomial activation functions are dense in the space of continuous functions between two Euclidean spaces, with respect to the compact convergence topology. Cleve Barry Moler (born August 17, 1939) is an American mathematician and computer programmer specializing in numerical analysis. In the mid to late 1970s, he was one of the authors of LINPACK and EISPACK, Fortran libraries for numerical computing. He created MATLAB, a numerical computing package, to give his students at the University of New Mexico easy access to these libraries without writing Fortran. In 1984, he co-founded MathWorks with Jack Little to commercialize this program.
