Sir Francis Compton
Sir Francis Compton (''c.''1629 – 20 December 1716) was an English soldier and politician. He sat in the Cavalier Parliament of the House of Commons between 1664 and 1679. Compton was the 5th son of Spencer Compton, 2nd Earl of Northampton. His brothers included Sir Charles Compton and Sir William Compton. Compton married 4 times. His first marriage was to Elizabeth, the daughter and co-heir of Sir Capel Bedell, 1st Baronet. The second, in June 1664, was to Jane daughter of Sir John Trevor. Jane died in 1677, and he later married Mary, daughter of Samuel Fortrey of Kew, widow of Sir Thomas Trevor, 1st Baronet. His fourth marriage, in 1699, was to Sarah, niece of Anthony Rowe MP of Whitehall. Lynn Compton
Lynn Davis "Buck" Compton (December 31, 1921 – February 25, 2012) was an American jurist, law enforcement officer, and United States Army officer during World War II, serving as a paratrooper in "Easy Company" of the 506th Infantry Regiment within the 101st Airborne Division. After the war, he joined the Los Angeles Police Department and later the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office, where he rose to the position of chief deputy district attorney. He acted as the lead prosecutor in the trial of Sirhan Sirhan for the Assassination of Robert F. Kennedy. He was eventually appointed as a judge on the California Court of Appeal. Compton's World War II exploits were depicted in the 1992 book '' Band of Brothers'' by historian Stephen E. Leslie Harry Compton (12 September 1912 – 27 December 1984) was an English sportsman who played football and cricket for Arsenal and Middlesex, respectively. He gained two England caps late in his football career, and remains the oldest outfield player to debut for England (and the oldest post-war debutant in any position). His brother, Denis, was also a footballer and cricketer for Arsenal and Middlesex, though Leslie was more successful in football and Denis in cricket. Katie Compton (born December 3, 1978) is an American former bicycle racer. She specialized in cyclo-cross racing and is a 15-time national champion. Compton formerly piloted a tandem with a blind partner in Paralympic events. She has won the USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships Elite Women's title in an unbroken 15- win streak every season from 2004 to 2018. Since she took part in Paralympic events she can not enter any bicycle races which award UCI points. Since she was unable to take part in major races before the National Championship, her win was a surprise to other racers, fans and journalists, ending her Paralympic career under UCI regulations. Karl Taylor Compton (September 14, 1887 – June 22, 1954) was an American physicist and president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from 1930 to 1948. Compton built much of MIT's modern research enterprise, including systems for technology transfer and federal government research partnerships that became central to United States science and technology policy. An accomplished professor of nuclear physics at Princeton, Compton was recruited to MIT to promote basic science programs to complement MIT's existing emphasis on vocational training. John Haywood Compton (1876–1957) was an English pipe organ builder. His business based in Nottingham and London flourished between 1902 and 1965. Life John Compton was born in Newton Burgoland, Leicestershire, England on 20 June 1876. He was educated at King Edward's School, Birmingham, and then studied as an apprentice with Halmshaw & Sons in Birmingham. In 1898, he joined Brindley and Foster in Sheffield.. Henry Compton (born Charles Mackenzie; 22 March 1805 – 15 September 1877) was an English actor best known for his Shakespearean comic roles. Compton began his career in Shakespeare plays in the British provinces. He then began to specialize in low comedy roles in touring companies, where he played for over a decade. He first appeared in London in 1837 and joined the company at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane later that year, again playing in Shakespeare. Other notable roles that followed included Tony Lumpkin in ''She Stoops to Conquer'', Gnatbrain in ''Black-Eyed Susan'', Sir Peter Teazle in ''The School for Scandal'' and Foresight in ''Love for Love''. Henry Compton ( – 7 July 1713) was an Anglican clergyman who served as the Bishop of London from 1675 to 1713. Early life Compton was born the sixth and youngest son of the 2nd Earl of Northampton. He was educated at The Queen's College, Oxford, but left in 1654 without a degree, and then travelled in Europe. After the restoration of Charles II in 1660 he became a cornet in his brother Charles's troop of the Royal Regiment of Horse, but soon quit the army for the church. After a further period of study at Cambridge and again at Oxford, he graduated as a D.D. in 1669. He held various livings, including rector of Cottenham, and Witney.
