Companion (Doctor Who)
In the long-running BBC television science fiction programme ''Doctor Who'' and related works, the term "companion" refers to a character who travels with, or shares adventures with, the The Doctor (Doctor Who), Doctor. A companion is generally the series' co-lead character alongside the Doctor for the duration of their tenure, and in most ''Doctor Who'' stories acts as an audience surrogate by providing the lens through which the viewer is introduced to the story, and often, the series itself. The companion character often furthers the story by asking questions and getting into trouble; also by helping, rescuing, or challenging the Doctor. This designation is applied to a character by the show's producers and appears in the BBC's promotional material and off-screen fictional terminology. Science fiction first appeared in television programming in the late 1930s, during what is called the Golden Age of Science Fiction. Special effects and other production techniques allow creators to present a living visual image of an imaginary world not limited by the constraints of reality. Visual production process and methods The need to portray imaginary settings or characters with properties and abilities beyond the reach of current reality obliges producers to make extensive use of specialized techniques of television production. Through most of the 20th century, many of these techniques were expensive and involved a small number of dedicated craft practitioners, while the reusability of props, models, effects, or animation techniques made it easier to keep using them. Josephine "Jo" Grant, later Jo Jones, is a fictional character played by Katy Manning in the long-running British science fiction television series ''Doctor Who''. Rory Williams
Rory Williams is a fictional character portrayed by Arthur Darvill in the long-running British science fiction television series ''Doctor Who''. Having been introduced in 2010, at the start of Series 5, Rory joins the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) as a companion a few episodes later. As fellow companion Amy Pond's ( Karen Gillan) fiancé, Rory is initially insecure because he believes Amy secretly loves the Doctor more. Amelia "Amy" Pond (also known as Amy Williams) is a fictional character portrayed by Karen Gillan in the long-running British science fiction television series ''Doctor Who''. The fifth series of the British science-fiction television programme ''Doctor Who'' was originally broadcast on BBC One in 2010. The series began on 3 April 2010 with " The Eleventh Hour", and ended with " The Big Bang" on 26 June 2010. The series is the first to be led by Steven Moffat, who took over as head writer and executive producer when Russell T Davies ended his involvement in the show after " The End of Time". Earthshock
''Earthshock'' is the sixth serial of the 19th season of the British science fiction television series ''Doctor Who''. It was first broadcast in four twice-weekly parts on BBC1 from 8 to 16 March 1982. This serial marks the final regular appearance of Matthew Waterhouse as Adric and his death, with the final episode featuring unique silent credits in loving memory of the character. It is also the first to feature the Cybermen since '' Revenge of the Cybermen'' in 1975. The serial is mainly set on Earth and a deep-space freighter in 2526. Nyssa (Doctor Who)
Nyssa is a fictional character in the long-running British science fiction television series ''Doctor Who''. She is played by Sarah Sutton. Although Nyssa was created by writer Johnny Byrne for the single Fourth Doctor serial ''The Keeper of Traken'', the production team subsequently decided she should be retained as a continuing character. Tegan Jovanka is a fictional character played by Janet Fielding in the long-running British science fiction television series ''Doctor Who''. An Australian airline stewardess and a native of Brisbane who was a companion of the Fourth and Fifth Doctors, she was a regular in the programme from 1981 to 1984. Adric is a fictional character played by Matthew Waterhouse in the long-running British science fiction television series ''Doctor Who''. He was a young native of the planet Alzarius, which exists in the parallel universe of E-Space.
