Community Action Tenants Union
Community Action Tenants Union is a national tenants' union in Ireland. Established in 2019, it is a mass membership organisation of "renters, council tenants, mortgage holders and people in emergency & precarious living situations". CATU is affiliated to ACORN International. Structure CATU members are organised in local branches across the island of Ireland, with committees elected by local members. A national committee coordinates the work of local branches. CATU organises campaigns at local and national level, and its work is grounded in principles of direct action. The union's modelled after the Scottish tenants' union Living Rent, as well as being influenced by the work of the National Association of Tenants Organisations. A tenants union, also known as a renters' union or a tenants association, is a group of tenants that collectively organize to improve the conditions of their housing and mutually educate about their rights as renters. Groups may also lobby local officials to change housing policies or address homelessness. ACORN International
ACORN International is a federation of autonomous member-based community organizations and tenants unions. The organisations represent a total membership numbers are currently at approximately 250,000 members. ACORN International has active affiliated organisations in multiple countries, such as Cameroon, Canada, the Czech Republic, England, France, Honduras, India, Ireland, Italy, Kenya, Peru, Scotland, Tunisia, the United States, and Wales. Living Rent
Living Rent is a national tenants' union in Scotland. Originally established in 2014 as a campaign group urging the Scottish Government to implement rent controls, it subsequently became a mass membership organisation of tenants aiming to "tackle the power imbalance between landlords and tenants" through collective action. Living Rent is affiliated to ACORN International and is an associate member of the International Union of Tenants (IUT). Structure Living Rent is a democratic, members-led organisation. Members are organised in branches, typically at a neighbourhood level, each of which has a committee elected by local members. There are multiple branches across Glasgow and Edinburgh, as well as branches in Aberdeen, Dundee, Inverness, and Paisley. Branches work together on national campaigns through the national forum. 1970–1973 Republic Of Ireland Rent Strikes
From 1970 through to 1973, social housing tenants in the Republic of Ireland were on a rent strike. The action began as a series of smaller local rent strikes. In 1972, the National Association of Tenants Organisations officially called for a national rent strike across all of the Republic of Ireland. The rent strike largely ended on August 1973 after the government conceded. Background B-scale rent system of the Housing Act 1966 resulted in increased rent burden on tenants living in social housing. Additionally, a lack of services in social housing estates, and desire for greater control over the estates by the tenants added further difficulties. In 1967, the National Association of Tenants Organisations was founded as an umbrella of local tenants' organisations.
