The Communist Party of Italy ( it, Partito Comunista d'Italia, PCd'I) was a short-lived communist party in Italy which represented a transition from the Party of Italian Communists (1998–2014) and the Italian Communist Party (2016–present). History The PCdI, which took the name from the 1921–1926 Communist Party of Italy (PCd'I), emerged in 2014 from a transformation of the Party of Italian Communists (PdCI), a communist party launched by splinters of the Communist Refoundation Party (PRC) in 1998. Before becoming a tiny party, the PdCI was a party of government and controlled dozens of seats in the Parliament. Cesare Procaccini, a metalworkers' trade unionist who had replaced Oliviero Diliberto as PdCI's leader in 2013, was the party's secretary since its foundation while Manuela Palermi, a former senator, its president. The PCI was founded as ''Communist Party of Italy'' on 21 January 1921 in Livorno by seceding from the Italian Socialist Party (PSI). Amadeo Bordiga, Antonio Gramsci, and Nicola Bombacci led the split. Outlawed during the Fascist regime, the party played a major role in the Italian resistance movement. It changed its name in 1943 to PCI and became the second largest political party of Italy after World War II, attracting the support of about a third of the vote share during the 1970s. At the time, it was the largest communist party in the West, with peak support reaching 2.3 million members, in 1947, and peak share being 34.4% of the vote (12.6 million votes) in the 1976 general election. Antonino Cuffaro (21 April 1932, Sambuca di Sicilia – 20 July 2019, Trieste) was an Italian politician. Biography Cuffaro was the son of Domenico Cuffaro, one of the founders of the Communist Party of Italy, leader of the Sicilian peasant and miners' movement and CGIL leader in the province of Agrigento. After graduating in Naval and Mechanical Engineering with the highest grades, he moved to Aquileia, Friuli-Venezia Giulia. He assumed a chair of engineering at the "Alessandro Volta" Technical Institute in Trieste and worked as a consultant in the engineering field. At that time Cuffaro joined the Italian Communist Party and in 1962 he was elected municipal councilor in Trieste. He was also elected regional councilor of Friuli-Venezia Giulia (1967–1976). Oliviero Diliberto (born 13 October 1956 in Cagliari) is an Italian politician. He has been leader of the Party of Italian Communists. Early life Oliviero Diliberto was born in a family of public servants (his father Marco was employed as attorney in the Administration of the Region of Sardinia, his mother Lella was a teacher). His youth is scarred by the untimely death of his father in 1971, after which he had to be a fatherly role for his younger siblings: his sister Ludovica, then eight years old, and his brother Alessio, who was born just two months before. The Communist Refoundation Party ( it, Partito della Rifondazione Comunista, PRC) is a communist political party in Italy that emerged from a split of the Italian Communist Party (PCI) in 1991. The party's secretary is Maurizio Acerbo, who replaced Paolo Ferrero in 2017. Armando Cossutta was the party's founder, while Fausto Bertinotti its longest-serving leader (1994–2008). The latter transformed the PRC from a traditional communist party into a collection of radical social movements.
