Commonwealth Peak
Commonwealth Peak is a mountain summit in the Spray Mountains, a sub-range of the Canadian Rockies in Alberta, Canada. The mountain is situated in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park. Its nearest higher peak is Mount Birdwood, to the west. Both can be seen from Alberta Highway 742, also known as Smith-Dorrien/Spray Trail in Kananaskis Country. __NOTOC__ History Commonwealth Peak was named in 1979 to commemorate the 1978 Commonwealth Games that were held in Edmonton, Alberta. The mountain's name was officially adopted in 1979 by the Geographical Names Board of Canada. The first ascent of the peak was made in 1970 by Charlie Locke and Lloyd McKay. Geology Commonwealth Peak is composed of sedimentary rock laid down during the Precambrian to Jurassic periods. Formed in shallow seas, this sedimentary rock was pushed east and over the top of younger rock during the Laramide orogeny. Sedimentary rocks are types of rock (geology), rock formed by the cementation (geology), cementation of sediments—i.e. particles made of minerals (geological detritus) or organic matter (biological detritus)—that have been accumulated or deposited at Earth's surface. Mount Sir Douglas
Mount Sir Douglas is located on the border of Alberta and British Columbia on the Continental Divide, at the northern end of Height of the Rockies Provincial Park and east of Invermere. It is Alberta's 18th highest peak, and 28th prominence mountain as well as British Columbia's 28th highest peak. Kananaskis Range
The Kananaskis Range is a mountain range west of the Kananaskis River in the Continental Ranges of the Canadian Rockies. Many of the peaks are named after ships and people involved in the Battle of Jutland. Mount Bogart is named after D.B. Dowling. Bogart was his mother's maiden name and his middle name. D.B. The Köppen climate classification divides Earth climates into five main climate groups, with each group being divided based on patterns of seasonal precipitation and temperature. Laramide Orogeny
The Laramide orogeny was a time period of mountain building in western North America, which started in the Late Cretaceous, 80 to 70 million years ago, and ended 55 to 35 million years ago. The exact duration and ages of beginning and end of the orogeny are in dispute. The Laramide orogeny occurred in a series of pulses, with quiescent phases intervening. The major feature that was created by this orogeny was deep-seated, thick-skinned deformation, with evidence of this orogeny found from Canada to northern Mexico, with the easternmost extent of the mountain-building represented by the Black Hills of South Dakota.
