The Commandant of the Netherlands Marine Corps (, ) is the head of the Dutch marines. The current commandant, since 2023, is Ivo D.L. Moerman. History 17th century The billet was created in 1665 as the Colonel and Commandant of the Regiment of Marines (), first held by Willem Joseph baron van Ghent. It was known under that title until 1669 and from 1678 to 1698. From 1669 to 1678 it was known as the First Colonel of the Regiments of Ship Soldiers (). 18th century From 1698 to 1711 and from 1772 to 1795, the billet was called First Colonel of the Marine Regiment (). From 1711 to 1772 the billet was called Colonel and Commandant of the Marine Regiment (). 19th century From 1814 to 1817 the billet was known as the Commandant of the Marine Battalion (). In 1817 it received its current title of Commandant of the Marine Corps. The Royal Netherlands Marine Corps () is the elite naval infantry corps of the Royal Netherlands Navy, one of the four Netherlands Armed Forces, Armed Forces of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The marines trace their origins to the establishment of the on 10 December 1665, by the then grand pensionary of the Dutch Republic, Johan de Witt and famous Admiral Michiel de Ruyter. Willem Joseph Van Ghent
Willem Joseph van Ghent (14 May 1626 – 7 June 1672) was a Dutch States Navy officer and nobleman. His surname is also sometimes rendered Gendt or Gent; he was the first commander of the Dutch marines. Early career Van Ghent was baptised on 14 May 1626, in the church of Winssen. It is assumed he was born the same day. In 1642, he became provost of Elst, as a sinecure. Of noble birth, he made a career in the army from 1645 onwards; he started in the regiment of the Count of Hoorne; in 1648, he was promoted to the rank of captain, serving in said regiment. He first became connected to the navy when during the Northern Wars against Sweden in 1659, he executed a landing on the Danish island of Funen under command of Vice-Admiral Michiel de Ruyter.
