Comet Vale, Western Australia
Comet Vale is an abandoned town in Western Australia located in the Goldfield region of Western Australia located between Kalgoorlie and Laverton on the Goldfields Highway. It is within the Shire of Menzies. The town site was named after a comet that could be seen at about the time gold was discovered in the area. By 1895 the town had a population of approximately 500, and by 1897 the townspeople were demanding a post-office. The postmaster general instructed postmasters at Menzies and Googarrie prepare daily mail bags for Comet Vale which were then distributed at one of the stores in town. The ''Comet Vale Hotel'' was established some time prior to 1898. The town was gazetted in 1916. A prospector, Dan Baker is credited with the initial gold discovery. Two mines were in production in 1900 named ''Lady Margaret'' and ''Long tunnel''. Shire Of Menzies
The Shire of Menzies is a local government area in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia, north of Kalgoorlie. It covers an area of , and its seat of government is the town of Menzies. History The Shire of Menzies originated as the Menzies Road District, which was established on 31 May 1912 after the subdivision of the North Coolgardie Road District into three separate road districts (Menzies, Kookynie and Mt Malcolm). The North Coolgardie Road District had absorbed three municipalities on 1 March 1912, including the Municipality of Menzies covering the Menzies township, but had quickly proven too large and cumbersome to administer and was broken up. The Kookynie Road District merged into the Menzies Road District in mid-1918. The Menzies Road District became a shire on 1 July 1961 under the ''Local Government Act 1960'', which reformed all remaining road districts into shires. Menzies is a town in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia, east-northeast of the state capital, Perth, and north-northwest of the city of Kalgoorlie. At the 2016 census, Menzies had a population of 108. Aboriginal people have lived in this area since time immemorial. History Gold was discovered in the area in 1894, and Leslie Robert Menzies, a Canadian-born prospector, and John McDonald were the first to take up a lease here in October 1894, naming it the "Lady Shenton". It was a rich gold find, and the Mining Warden for the area recommended a townsite be declared in 1895, named in Menzies' honour. The townsite was gazetted in August 1895. Land around the town was sold in 1895 and by 1896 it had become a municipality. A railway line was constructed from Kalgoorlie to Menzies and opened on 22 March 1898. Ularring Land District
The lands administrative divisions of Western Australia refer to subdivisions of the state of Western Australia for cadastral (land title) purposes, most of which have been in place since the 19th century. Kalgoorlie To Leonora Railway Line
The Kalgoorlie to Leonora railway line or Leonora branch line is a railway line in the Goldfields–Esperance region of Western Australia, connecting Kalgoorlie via Malcolm to Leonora. The line is long and formerly also had a branch line from Malcolm to Laverton. The ''Coolgardie Miner'' (18 April 1894 – 16 June 1911) was a weekly newspaper established in Coolgardie, Western Australia, at a time when Coolgardie was the prominent town in the goldfields region of Western Australia. The subsequent publication with the same title (1 March 1913 – 29 December 1917) was published in a time when Kalgoorlie was dominating the goldfields, and Coolgardie's decline as centre had set in. Goongarrie, Western Australia
Goongarrie is an abandoned town in Western Australia, located in the Goldfield region of Western Australia north of Kalgoorlie. The town site was originally known as ''90 Mile'', the distance of the settlement from Coolgardie. A group of gold miners named Pickersgill, Cahill, Frost and Bennett, discovered gold in the area in 1893, which was the first discovery since gold was struck in Coolgardie. The town was known as ''90 Mile'' and ''The Roaring Gimlet'' initially; the latter name comes from the sound the south westerly wind makes as it roars through the gimlet trees. A townsite was proposed in 1894 and gazetted on 17 June 1895. Goongarrie was a stop on the Kalgoorlie to Leonora railway line and is still listed as such on contemporary maps.
